Psalms 34:8
O taste and see that the LORD is good:
blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
If we wish to taste the goodness of the LORD for ourselves, we must trust Him. We must fear and seek Him. Trusting or taking refuge in Him points to the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ, the salvation that He freely offers in His finished work on Calvary. As sinners, we face God’s judgment and eternal separation from Him in hell. Our only hope is to flee to Christ for refuge and fully trust in His atoning blood to save us from God’s wrath. When we turn to Christ in true repentance and faith, we receive forgiveness of sin. We are reconciled with God and receive eternal life.
We should also trust in the LORD to carry us safely through the storms of life. When adversity strikes, we should take shelter in Him. When we do, we will find safety, strength, provision, and deliverance.
Fearing God, like trusting Him, begins with salvation. When we truly fear the LORD, understand who He is and hold Him in reverential awe, we immediately recognize that our sinfulness has separated us from Him. The fear of the LORD drives us to establish a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. Then the fear of the LORD compels us to submit totally to Him, obeying His righteous commands as revealed in His Holy Word.
In seeking the LORD, we will enjoy all the riches found in Him. Certainly, this includes material needs, but we have greater needs than food, shelter, and clothing:
At first we may question David’s statement, because we seem to lack many good things. This is not a blanket promise that all Christians will have everything they want. Instead, this is David’s praise for God’s goodness all those who call upon God in their need will be answered, sometimes in unexpected ways.
Remember God knows what we need, and our deepest needs are spiritual. Many Christians, even though they face unbearable poverty and hardship, still have enough spiritual nourishment to live for God. David was saying that to have God is to have all you really need. God is enough.
We are not immune from the assaults of the devil and the consequences of the Fall. Nevertheless, we have the promise of God’s protection and provision. He saves our souls, He heals our bodies, He provides for our needs. It is true that we do not experience all of His kingdom fully in this life. Yet the signs of His goodness are also here. Is there not a real solution to the problem of suffering: “Taste and see that the LORD is good”? The Lord is good in His benefits, but more than that, the Lord is good in Himself. When we “taste” Him, we are filled. Jesus’ fulfillment and Paul’s fulfillment were not found in lives of ease. They were found in knowing the Lord and doing His will….To lack Christ is to lack everything. To have Christ is to have everything. Thus “those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.”
