Isaiah 6:5
Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

A deep conviction of unworthiness is necessary for us to serve the LORD. We must not measure ourselves against one another, for we are all of the same flesh and blood. We are all guilty of giving in to temptation, sinning through acts of commission or omission. Therefore, when we measure ourselves against one another, we are as good as everyone else. But to learn the truth about ourselves, we must measure ourselves against the LORD. When we see the LORD high and exalted, dwelling in the blazing holiness of His being, then we see the truth. We see just how far short of God’s glory we are, how terrible our sin is when contrasted with His perfection and glory (Ro. 3:23). The result of this comparison is just what we need: a deep conviction of sin and of unworthiness. Hence, we are driven or should be driven to seek forgiveness from the LORD, the only source of true forgiveness. And when the LORD pardons us, we are truly freed. Guilt is erased, and our spirits are set free from depression, discouragement, self-accusation, and the sense of failure. We are set free from the heavy weight of guilt that causes so many emotional problems, problems that far too often crush us and make us helpless, unable to function. Jesus Christ, He and He alone can and will set us free if we will confess and repent of our sins. In addition, confession and repentance are absolutely essential before we can genuinely serve the Lord.

Psalms 36:5
Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens;
and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

Living in a wicked world can easily discourage us because we are surrounded by so much evil. But as this point teaches, we must take our eyes off of the wickedness around us and focus on the faithfulness of God. In the midst of a world that is constantly changing for the worse, God is unchanging. He loves this world and He gave His Son to die for all, including the most wicked. His will is for every individual to have eternal life, and He shines the light of His love on all mankind. As believers, we have seen His light and received the life that He offers through faith in His Son. Through the blood of Jesus Christ, God has made a covenant with us. He cannot lie, and He cannot be untrue to His character. We will receive all that He has promised us, His mercy, faithfulness, righteousness and justice. We can trust the LORD. We can depend on Him. We can rest in His promises. Nothing can separate us from His love.

Psalms 109:30-31
I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude.
For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.

When other people slander or lie about us, the best course of action, the right course is to trust God to take care of it. We cannot control others and what they say about us. Nor can we do anything about those who recklessly believe everything they hear. Like David, we need to turn the matter over to the Lord and expect Him to deal justly with our enemies (Ro.12:19). God is faithful; He will do exactly as He has promised. Even when we face the fiercest attacks, we can believe God’s Word and praise Him in advance for vindicating and delivering us from the wicked who assault us.

Psalms 21:13
Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength:
so will we sing and praise thy power.

We should stand back and give God the full glory for all He has done for us, never daring to take credit for the victories God has won. Every good thing we are and have is due to Him, due to His abundant mercy, love, and power. We can do nothing to save ourselves; salvation is wholly of Him. We can do nothing to keep ourselves saved; we are kept by His mighty power. Though we fight against the world, the flesh, and the devil, every victory over these enemies is won by God’s power, the power that works in us through His indwelling Spirit.
Our God is a mighty warrior: He conquers all of our foes, every power or force that seeks to destroy us. It bears repeating that every good thing we have is from Him. Therefore, we should always give Him the glory and the praise, for He alone is worthy!

Jonah 4:10-11
Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

Sadly, the lessons we learn from Jonah, a believer, a man called by God, a prophet are how not to behave. Jonah ran away from God, rebelled against God, disobeyed God, argued with God, and even questioned God’s judgment. He also acted selfishly; he sulked; and he showed no concern for lost souls. Yet God has used the story of Jonah for centuries to teach the importance of obeying God, witnessing to the lost, and giving great hope to the most depraved of society.
As believers, we must not sit back and judge the wicked of the world. God loves them, too! There are a number of ways we can reach out to the lost and help fulfill the great commission. To name a few: we can pray; we can give financially; we can volunteer in an organization or activity; we can go to the mission fields of the world, some right in our own back yards. The point is this: we all have to do something. If we do not do it, who will? Listen to what God’s Holy Word says…
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Mt. 28:19-20).

Revelation 5:9
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

They sing a new song focused upon the worthiness of Christ. Remember: God had just held out the book of destiny and the shattering call had just pierced the air for someone worthy to step forth and to take the book.
Someone was needed to open the book and carry out the events upon earth. But no one was found worthy. Not even those who surround the very throne of God, the four
living creatures and elders, were worthy. Only one Person could step forward: the Lamb of God Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the scene here: when the living creatures and elders see the Lamb of God step forward and take the book from God, they fall down in worship and adoration and sing a song to Him, a song that has never been sung before.
Note that they praise Christ for three things.
1) They praise Him because He was slain for man and has redeemed man. It should read that Christ “has redeemed man (or them) to God.” They praise Christ because He died for the sins of man and has set man free from sin and death and the punishment to come. (Re. 5:6-7.)
2) They praise Him because of His universal salvation. No person is beyond His reach. He saves people from every tribe and language and race and nation. There is no prejudice or discrimination with Christ, no favorites and no partiality. He loves every person: male and female, poor and rich, black and white, yellow and red, ignorant and wise. Christ saves all who will come from every corner of the earth. Those who surround Christ and the throne of God shout their praise to Christ for His
universal salvation.

Psalms 109:1-3 (KJV)
1 Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;
2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.

How should we respond to those who attack us and lie about us? Jesus commanded us not to retaliate against our enemies but to love them, do good for them, and pray for them (Mt.5:43–45). We can choose to live on one of three levels when others stoop to slander or hurt us:
Satan’s level—returning evil for good; this was the level David’s enemies chose.
The human level—returning evil for evil and good for good.
God’s level—returning good for evil.
As believers in Jesus Christ, we are commanded to live on God’s level. We are not to repay evil with evil but to overcome evil by doing good for our enemies (Ro.12:17–21). We should pray for our enemies, asking God to bring them to repentance. To pray for our enemies is extremely difficult, but Christ has promised to reward us when we obey this challenging command (Lu.6:35).
Then, we should turn our enemies over to the Lord and trust Him to deal justly with them. This is what David did: he prayed for God to help him by dealing with his enemies. God has promised to avenge us, and, in His own time and way, He will vindicate us before all who falsely accuse us. Like David, we should determine to be people of prayer, people who firmly believe that our greatest weapon is prayer.

Psalms 34:8
O taste and see that the LORD is good:
blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

If we wish to taste the goodness of the LORD for ourselves, we must trust Him. We must fear and seek Him. Trusting or taking refuge in Him points to the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ, the salvation that He freely offers in His finished work on Calvary. As sinners, we face God’s judgment and eternal separation from Him in hell. Our only hope is to flee to Christ for refuge and fully trust in His atoning blood to save us from God’s wrath. When we turn to Christ in true repentance and faith, we receive forgiveness of sin. We are reconciled with God and receive eternal life.
We should also trust in the LORD to carry us safely through the storms of life. When adversity strikes, we should take shelter in Him. When we do, we will find safety, strength, provision, and deliverance.
Fearing God, like trusting Him, begins with salvation. When we truly fear the LORD, understand who He is and hold Him in reverential awe, we immediately recognize that our sinfulness has separated us from Him. The fear of the LORD drives us to establish a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. Then the fear of the LORD compels us to submit totally to Him, obeying His righteous commands as revealed in His Holy Word.
In seeking the LORD, we will enjoy all the riches found in Him. Certainly, this includes material needs, but we have greater needs than food, shelter, and clothing:
At first we may question David’s statement, because we seem to lack many good things. This is not a blanket promise that all Christians will have everything they want. Instead, this is David’s praise for God’s goodness all those who call upon God in their need will be answered, sometimes in unexpected ways.
Remember God knows what we need, and our deepest needs are spiritual. Many Christians, even though they face unbearable poverty and hardship, still have enough spiritual nourishment to live for God. David was saying that to have God is to have all you really need. God is enough.
We are not immune from the assaults of the devil and the consequences of the Fall. Nevertheless, we have the promise of God’s protection and provision. He saves our souls, He heals our bodies, He provides for our needs. It is true that we do not experience all of His kingdom fully in this life. Yet the signs of His goodness are also here. Is there not a real solution to the problem of suffering: “Taste and see that the LORD is good”? The Lord is good in His benefits, but more than that, the Lord is good in Himself. When we “taste” Him, we are filled. Jesus’ fulfillment and Paul’s fulfillment were not found in lives of ease. They were found in knowing the Lord and doing His will….To lack Christ is to lack everything. To have Christ is to have everything. Thus “those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.”
