I have been remiss in updating the page for several years now. Monuments on Main Street tour transitioned to Delta Center Stage several years ago and now has become part of their wonderful productions each season. The tour has benefitted greatly by their management in the form of lighting at the sites, microphones for the actors, even a "people mover" cart to help with patrons who are not as mobile as some. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the tour so changes have been great with DCS at the helm. What hasn't changed is the same wonderful stories about many of the permanent inhabitants at not only the Greenville Cemetery, but also from the Greenville Jewish Cemetery, Live Oak Cemetery and a few other cemeteries around the area. The Greenville area had some incredible people living, working, and making things happen in the Port City and we are always pleased to highlight their lives. Each season, most if not all of the stories are different and always enjoyable and informative. Each monument in the cemetery represents a life that we want to know more about.

This year's tour will be Friday, October 21, and Saturday, October 22 starting at 4:00 PM from St. James Episcopal Church. Sunday afternoon, October 23, tours will start at 2:30 PM. We no longer tour after dark for safety reasons in the cemetery. We ain't afraid of no ghosts, but we do worry about the uneven pathways. For that reason, we feel it is most prudent to tour when we have daylight.

This year's tour has 7 stops and all new characters. We have some wonderful stories to tell and we hope to see you at the tour. Thank you for your patronage and support.

It is not too soon for us to look ahead to the fall for our cemetery tour. Probably looking at an October date, but nothing firm just yet. If anyone has a relative from the late 1800's or early 1900's that is buried in the Greenville Cemetery, the Greenville Jewish Cemetery, Live Oak Cemetery, or the Chinese Cemetery and this person has an interesting story that we could tell, please contact me. We have so many wonderful stories to be told, but we always love to hear accounts from actual family members. Message me here at Monuments on Main Street. Thanks!

Although our next tour seems a long way off, work begins on the stories to be told for next year. If you would like for us to consider YOUR family and would help by providing info and details, please let us know. Every monument large or small is a story to be told. Let me hear from you!

"We study history as to not repeat our mistakes."
It's likely we have all heard this, even said it. As Anissa Cantrell Tonos and I were leaving the grounds of the Greenville Cemetery on Friday evening after our tour of the monuments, I couldn't help but think; what about the part where we study history to repeat the things we did right? Where have all the things that were done right go that has left us where we are today? I look around and though I do see good, I see so much that has been lost. I have to admit, though I recognized the family names, I didn't know much about the people who were portrayed in the scripts, but I was certainly impressed to learn that Greenvillians of 100 years ago were breaking ground in the arts, business, medicine, social structure, advances in civil rights and education. As I walked across the street I couldn't help but imagine that many of those who were passing by in their cars watching us walk from the cemetery, had no idea what we were doing nor do they realize what they had missed or even an idea of the history that is less often repeated but more commonly forgotten. Ironically, a tour of the cemetery was a reminder of what I should be doing in life. It would do us good to have some history repeat itself - the history that makes us proud to be the gem of the Delta, a place envied, a place where everyone wants to live.... and maybe that's what is in our future.

The 2017 Fall Monuments on Main Street Tour is in the books and has been "laid to rest". Thank you to everyone who came out on what seemed to be a middle of summer tour. We had over 300 people who attended the tour over 3 days. Lots of wonderful history in our community and what a great way to learn AND be entertained. Looking forward to 2018! If anyone has any suggestions for future characters to be featured, message us. We are always happy to consider any suggestions.

As the Monuments on Main Street Cemetery Tour is quickly approaching, people will ask me, "is the cemetery haunted?" Well, if you are thinking that there are evil spirits lurking behind every headstone and tree waiting to scare the "be-jeebies" out of you, then NO, the cemetery is not haunted. However, back in 2012 when I first started researching characters for the tour, I learned of a man named Charles Heard who was murdered in 1892. Mr. Heard had owned a restaurant at the train depot in Leland, MS, and was working there the day he was shot and killed. He was a father of 3 young children who witnessed the shooting and he himself was a young man of 36 years old. I was reading about Mr. Heard's life and death while sitting in my car right next to his headstone there in the Greenville cemetery. While reading his story, the sensor alarm went off on my car as if another car was too close behind me. Or perhaps someone was walking in the cemetery and set the alarm off on my car. Neither was the case. No one was around. I was sitting there all alone. I dismissed the alarm and continued to read. The alarm goes off again. I looked over at Heard's headstone and told him, "ok, Mr. Heard, I'll move on." And I did. But we decided to include him on the tour that year. A week before the tour, the Heard headstone had shifted off its base. It is too heavy for a gentle push to cause it to move or even an intended force to move it so the shifting of the headstone remained a mystery but an obvious change in the stone. Since that tour, Mr. Heard has become my "friendly spirit" in the cemetery. He continues to play tricks on me. For instance, his headstone has moved completely off its base and we have no idea how that happened. It is too heavy for the average man or several men to move it. But move, it does. A friend of mine photographed several monuments one day. I took her to Mr. Heard's site and photos were taken. Later that evening as she downloaded photos, Mr. Heard's were the ONLY photos that were NOT there. We had to reshoot. I frequently "feel" someone watching me when I am working in the cemetery. I am always looking up, but no one is there. I spotted a man walking in the cemetery one day--walking towards me, but he was at a distance. I waited for him to arrive as I continued to rake and cut, but he never did. I can't help but think that Mr. Heard allowed me a glimpse of himself that day as he kept a watchful eye on me. The latest "encounter" happened just last Friday. My mother and I were riding through the cemetery and I was reading various tour scripts to her. We were sitting at Heard's headstone although I was reading the script of Mary Sheldon House. My phone is on the console resting quietly. Then Siri turns on out of the clear blue and says "what can I help you with?" I rarely use Siri and really fumble with turning it on when I do. I stopped, turned to Mr. Heard's headstone and said, "hello, Mr. Heard. I wasn't ignoring you, but hello! I'm glad you are here." I have other "happenings" with Mr. Heard, but these are just a few for now. I know all these occurrences can have logical explanations and I am a life long student of the sciences so I am always looking at logical explanations. In this situation, I am choosing to believe that I have a new friend in the Greenville Cemetery and his name is Charles Heard. The Cemetery tour is October 6 - 8, 2017. Plan to attend. I always take one tour out each evening of the tour. As an added bonus on "my" tour, I will make a quick stop at Mr. Heard's headstone and tell you about his life. Mark your calendars for the tour. Come out to support Delta Center Stage and to benefit the Greenville Cemetery -- and to say hello to Mr. Heard. Thanks for all the support! Kathy Davis Day

The fall "lineup" is confirmed and the roles have been cast. This tour is one that you should not miss. Tour dates are October 6 - 8, 2017. October 6 and 7 are evening tours starting at 6:30 PM. October 8 will be a matinee tour. Tickets will be on sale soon. Seating is available at each stop. We have assistance for those attendees who are mobility challenged so don't let that keep you from attending the tour. This year's stories are some of the best ever. They include: Jake Stein, Hodding Carter, Holt Collier, Father Paul Korstenbroek (St. Joseph parishioners will not want to miss Father Paul), Forrest Aldridge Hecker, Mary Lipe Gamble, and for the first time, a child's story will be told---Lena Love Hilliard. The weekend is a "good" date for us and an "off" date for SEC football. Come out! Support Delta Center Stage and the Greenville Cemetery Association.

Research and script writing is underway for the fall tour. We have a great line up of stories to tell. Some very famous Greenvillians will be featured, someone who immortalized a President of the United States, and for the first time, we will hear the story of a child buried there in the cemetery. You won't want to miss this tour. Stay tuned for more tour "teasers" coming soon.

What a GREAT TOUR this year! Thank you to everyone who came out for the hot and humid tour on Friday night and to everyone who came for the "bring your coat" tour on Saturday night. Monuments on Main Street is laid to rest for 2017, but will resurrect again in 2018 with lots more wonderfully entertaining stories of the famous and infamous people who are the history of Greenville. Thank you to the Greenville Cemetery Association and to the Delta Center Stage actors who brought the cemetery to life for us on Friday and Saturday. It was a BLAST! Rave reviews all around.
