We will hear Jesus ask the disciples the question at the center of Matthew’s Gospel: “Who do y’all say that I am?” Peter answers, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” even though he does not yet fully understand what that confession means. His faith begins with grace, and so does ours—we do not have to have every question settled before we learn to trust Jesus with our lives. Jesus then reminds us that faith is never only private; he gathers us into a people and says, “I will build my church.” We are called to belong to Christ and learn together what it means to follow him faithfully. As we come to the Table, our coming becomes part of our answer: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and we are his.
