Can Christians go to war? And if so, what does a just war look like? This Sunday (September 13) in the Rector's Forum, Mthr. Emily sits down with Charles Mathewes, a scholar of Just War Theory, to Talk About the Moral Questions of War and wrestle with some of the hardest questions facing Christians today. How do we hold together Jesus’ call to love our enemies with the possibility that force may sometimes be necessary to defend the innocent? And what does our faith ask of us when war feels especially urgent? Come wrestle with these difficult questions and explore what Christian faithfulness looks like in a world at war.

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. At last Sunday evening’s Youth Gathering, Ginny Miles, Director of the St. Paul’s, Ivy and Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Food Pantry, joined the Youth to talk about food insecurity in our community. Her stories about how people can find themselves struggling to put food on the table opened their eyes to a reality that can be easy to overlook.

The Food Pantry provides nutritious groceries to families who need a little extra help each month. But as Ginny shared, there’s one thing that’s often missing: a fun snack to enjoy.

So she challenged the Youth to help! Each young person was invited to choose a snack from a list of suggestions and buy five to share at the next Food Pantry distribution on Wednesday, September 16. The snacks will be offered from a special table labeled “Provided by the Youth of St. Paul’s, Ivy”, a small way to share a little extra joy.

Tomorrow, September 5, is the International Day of Charity, a day to celebrate and encourage acts of generosity and service. The Youth are already finding one small way to make a difference. What could you do?

The Rev. Emily Fisher takes the seat across from Fr. Justin for a conversation about her journey to ordained ministry, her years of ministry in Charlottesville, what drew her to St. Paul’s, and what she’s excited to bring to our life together.

Emily joined the St. Paul’s staff in August, leading our work in evangelism, parish life, and congregational care. And there’s another big moment just around the corner: she’ll be ordained to the priesthood on September 19! Come get to know Emily a little better, and then help us celebrate her next chapter.

This Saturday, September 5, men from the parish will gather again in Neve Hall for prayer, fellowship, and Bible study. The St. Paul's, Ivy Men's Group offers men a chance to slow down, connect with other men, and dig a little deeper into the Christian faith. Led by Fr. Justin and Geoff Bollier, the group discusses the Gospel reading for the following Sunday along with other resources and topics that help put faith into practice.

This Sunday’s Choral Evensong will transport you from the English cathedral tradition to the American South, and even to music written right here at St. Paul’s. You’ll hear Herbert Sumsion’s beautiful, lilting Evening Service in G, alongside O Jesus, My Savior, a Primitive Baptist folk hymn passed down through generations. An anthem built on another folk tune brings a lush choral sound to the service, while newly written music for St. Paul’s and Lucy Walker’s setting of the Lord’s Prayer add a contemporary voice.

Different traditions. Different centuries. One beautiful service, and one shared invitation to discover the beauty of holiness through music. We hope you'll join us for Choral Evensong this Sunday evening. All are welcome.

Gather with St. Paul’s, Ivy Women’s Group next Tuesday for good conversation, meaningful connection, and some much-needed time together. As a group, you'll explore the life-giving relationships of women in Scripture, from Ruth and Naomi to Mary and Elizabeth. Their stories, and the stories of so many other women in the Bible, help shape our understanding of Christian faith and give us plenty to talk about, reflect on, and learn from together.

Bring a beverage or snack to share (if you can), and come with an open heart and mind. Whether you’ve been part of the group for years or are joining for the first time, come as you are and pull up a chair. There’s always room for one more.

What happens when we can’t see the way forward? In Mthr. Emily’s Children’s Homily on Sunday, August 30, she and the children explored the Gospel reading, Matthew 16:21–28, through a lesson about following someone who knows the way, trusting God when life gets hard, and what Dolly Parton can teach us about using our gifts to love and serve others.
