CALL TO WORSHIP

I think about this scripture often when thinking about worship. I love what we call the corporate worship, when we worship here, together as the body of Christ. But as this passage points out, worship continues throughout the week - you could say 24-7.

Romans 12: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Offer our bodies as living sacrifices, this is true and proper worship. But what does that mean exactly? I believe that God’s word provides at least part of the explanation in the following verses, when we are called to use our gifts.

"For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully."

I want to encourage you this morning to understand worship in this way, using your gifts to glorify God. Pray about it. What are your gifts, what is God’s will for your life? How can we worship by being a living sacrifice?
I also want to encourage you to read the rest of Romans 12. There is much more on how to worship by being a living sacrifice.
Let’s pray together.
Father in heaven, you have been so merciful to us. Your grace is abundant and your gifts are abundant. Help us to live active, worshipful lives. We are so thankful to be here together to worship you, help us to continue to worship throughout the week. Thank you for Jesus, our Lord and our Savior, Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP

2 Corinthians 1:9
Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, WHO RAISES THE DEAD.

Today, we gather to worship the God who raises the dead.
The God who raised Lazarus from the dead.
The God who raised Jesus from the dead.
The God who will raise us from the dead.

Let us worship the God who raises the dead.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 100 (NIV)
1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

1 Timothy 4:4 (NIV)
4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected ….

The big gospel points here are:
There is a God
God has always been good and wants good for us
We were created to be in a relationship with God and that what God wants with us

So as we come to worship God today, let us remember that: there is a God and He is good.

CALL TO WORSHIP

CALL TO WORSHIP:

IN THE BEGINNING
God was in the Garden
with Adam and Eve.
And it was Good.
Genesis Chapters 2 and 3

IN THE END

We find God,
FATHER and SON
living with His people in
The New Jerusalem.

I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, …And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.
Revelation 21:2-3 -

Also see verse 21 of chapter 21

I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

IN THE PRESENT TIME

We are the TEMPEL OF GOD.
We are His dwelling place.
Both individually and
Collectively.

LET US ENTER HIS PRESENCE AND WORSHIP THE FATHER, THE SON, THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Bellevue Church of Christ is hiring for a new senior minister! Dave Shaner will be retiring after 20+ years with us. We will miss having him in the pulpit each week, but thankfully, he and Kathy will still be a part of our church family here. Please let BCOC know if you or someone you know would be a great fit for our next Sr. Minister position!

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 99
1 The Lord reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake.
2 Great is the Lord in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name—
he is holy.
4 The King is mighty, he loves justice—
you have established equity;
in Jacob you have done
what is just and right.
5 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his footstool;
he is holy.

Revelation 19
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
king of kings and lord of lords.

Song Number 144 (O Worship the King):
O worship the King all-glorious above,
And gratefully sing his power and his love:
our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

Father in Heaven,
We bow before you. Lord, we submit our lives to you. You are glorious, you are holy, and your name is great and awesome. Lord, I confess, this image of you in Revelation makes me tremble. Your power and the idea of your coming wrath are overwhelming. Thank you for the blood of Jesus, thank you that as your beloved children we are not subject to your wrath. Lord you are faithful and true, and you are just and you will make everything right. Lord you always do the right thing. So, we worship you king of kings and lord of lords. May our worship be pleasing and acceptable. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP

WHY DO WE WORSHIP GOD?
BECAUSE WE BELIEVE PETER’S WORDS

…”Whoever would love life and see good days:
must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
They must turn from evil and do good;
they must seek peace and pursue it.

WHY DO WE WORSHIP? Because WE KNOW

…the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

WHY DO WE WORSHIP?
WE KNOW WHERE JESUS IS NOW

… by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand —with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
1 Peter 3:10-12,21-22

CALL TO WORSHIP

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead...

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Mark chapter 8:
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

This scripture came up in my daily Bible reading recently and it’s been on my heart since then. But, you might be wondering what this has to do with worship. Everything.

Paul urges us in Romans chapter 12: 12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Both of these scriptures describe worship, complete worship, 24/7 worship, living sacrifice worship, and unashamed worship. I needed this reminder from God’s word and I hope that you do too.

Let’s pray together.
Father in heaven, thank you for reminding us of how to worship, everyday. Lord, this sort of sacrifice is not easy, and we confess that we often fall short of it. Change our hearts Lord, change our lives because we are not ashamed to follow you. Father God, we want to be holy and pleasing to you, we want to live the lives you have planned for us. We want to share your love with the people we know. Please guide us by your word and by your Spirit. Father, we worship you now. May you be glorified, may you be pleased. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
