Founded in 1792, St. Joseph Cathedral Parish is a Roman Catholic community of faith affirming God's presence and action in the world by giving witness to our savior Jesus Christ. It was designated as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Baton Rouge by St. John XXIII in 1961.

The Cathedral clock tower has long been a defining feature of our skyline. When a wind storm knocked out the eastern-facing clock, the loss was immediately noticeable on one of the community's most recognizable landmarks.

The installation of a custom-made replica in 2025 restored this iconic feature and helped ensure the tower retained the historic appearance that generations have come to know.

This restoration is one example of the Preservation Society's continuing dedication to preserving the Cathedral's heritage and architectural legacy.

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Gregory the Great, one of the Church’s greatest popes, theologians, and teachers and one of the four original Doctors of the Latin Church. A tireless shepherd and defender of the faith, St. Gregory helped shape the Church’s liturgy and is traditionally associated with the development of Gregorian chant. His writings and pastoral wisdom continue to influence the life of the Church today.

The next time you’re at St. Joseph Cathedral, take a moment to admire the beautiful stained-glass window of St. Gregory the Great. His window is part of a grouping with St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, and St. Augustine—the other three original Doctors of the Latin Church.

On September 2, 1945, World War II officially came to an end.

After the war, parishioners dedicated a white marble cross in memory of the members of our St. Joseph Cathedral parish who gave their lives during World War II. Today, the cross hangs on the wall of the parish hall near the Bishops’ Courtyard.

Inscribed in the stone at the feet of Christ are the names of those we honor:

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Augustine of Hippo, one of the Church’s greatest theologians and teachers and one of the four original Doctors of the Latin Church. His profound journey of conversion, beautifully chronicled in his Confessions, offers powerful testimony to God’s grace and the human heart’s longing for truth, as he famously wrote, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You, O Lord.”

The Diocese of Baton Rouge is inviting young singers from across the diocese to become part of a new musical ministry with the formation of the Diocesan Children's Choir.

Children ages 10–13 (5th–8th grade) are invited to audition and share their musical gifts while serving the Church through sacred music.

The choir will lead the faithful in song at several significant Advent and Christmas liturgies at St. Joseph Cathedral, including the First and Third Sundays of Advent and the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass.

🎵 Auditions: September 8–11 | 4:00–7:00 p.m.
📍 Location: St. Joseph Cathedral Choir Room
🎶 Rehearsals: Tuesdays, 5:30–6:45 p.m., beginning September 15

Previous choir experience and music-reading skills are encouraged but not required. Any child who enjoys singing is welcome to audition!

Yesterday, St. Joseph Cathedral was honored to host the Scout Awards Ceremony following Mass. Scouts from across the diocese gathered to celebrate their accomplishments, with Bishop Duca presenting awards to the Scouts in recognition of their hard work and dedication. Happy Feast Day of St. Rose of Lima! Today we celebrate the first canonized saint of the Americas, whose life is beautifully reflected in this stained glass window at St. Joseph Cathedral.

At the center, St. Rose gazes upon a crucifix, reflecting her deep love for Christ. Surrounding her are symbols of four virtues central to her life:

Chastity — white lilies, representing purity and complete dedication to God.

Poverty — an empty horn of plenty, representing her detachment from worldly possessions and reliance on God.

Education — a book and candle, symbolizing spiritual wisdom and the light of Christ and truth.

Obedience — a yellow flower, symbolizing her steadfastness and faithful submission to God’s will.

The circular stained-glass window is traditionally called a rose window (a fitting coincidence for a window honoring St. Rose of Lima). Its circular form symbolizes eternity and the fullness of a life centered on Christ.

St. Joseph Cathedral is both a historic landmark and a place of worship for Catholics across our Diocese. Preserving its beauty and integrity requires ongoing stewardship and support.

The Cathedral’s Preservation Society helps care for and preserve our Cathedral for future generations. We are grateful to its members and all those whose generosity has supported these efforts over the years.

Today, August 11th, we celebrate the feast day of St. Clare of Assisi!

Inspired by St. Francis, she founded the Poor Clares, embracing a life of radical poverty and prayer. She famously protected Assisi from invaders with the Blessed Sacrament. St. Clare is also known as the patron saint of television because, when she was too ill to attend Mass, it's said she miraculously saw and heard the service on the wall of her cell. Her life is a beautiful example of deep faith and trust in God's providence.
