St James Episcopal Church

St James Episcopal Church St. Established in 1844 and in the same church at Convention and Fourth Street constructed in 1894, we may be in the same location, but St.

James Episcopal Church is a welcoming, downtown congregation with a mission to serve Christ through worship, fellowship, education, pastoral care, and outreach to all. James is a church on the move! It's a place to grow spiritually, a place to make new friends, a place to serve God with your own special talents. For over 150 years, St. James has continued its mission of service to members of the parish and the greater community of our neighborhood, the city and the world.

It's the small moments that matter on Community Connections Sundays: greeting a guest by name, refilling a cup of hot coffee, sitting across from a new friend over breakfast, watching children share joy in the way only they can, handing out a bag of food that represents a lifeline.

In August, we proudly served over 113 guests from the food pantry and provided over 200 hot breakfasts. For CCS to run smoothly, and for each guest to feel seen and cared for, we need a minimum of 30 volunteers each month. Won't you join us?

Thanks to the generosity of the St. James community, we collected hundreds of hygiene items and boxes full of art supplies! These gifts will go to students in the Culture Club at Scotlandville and Capitol High Schools. We're grateful for the chance to meet everyday needs like toothpaste and deodorant and to help students reach their creative potential with fresh markers, notebooks, and paint. Members of the Outreach Committee look forward to joining a Culture Club afternoon later in September!"

Interested in adding your voice to something timeless? The St. James Choir is ready to welcome you!

The St. James Choir (adults) rehearses on Wednesdays from 7-8:45 p.m., and sings most Sundays in the academic year, as well as special services like Evensong and Lessons & Carols. You do not need to be a professional musician to sing with us! You only need a good ear, a basic understanding of how to read music, and the willingness to commit to our schedule. The first rehearsal of the 2026/2027 season is Wednesday, August 26.

Contact Director of Music, Shannon Gallier, for more information or to express interest.

How is God like a s'more? Find a St. James Sunday school student and they can tell you! Kicking off this year's Sunday school with Camp St. James was a blast. We learned some truths about God's character, got tangled up in the Name Game web, and shared some indoor s'mores with friends new and old. Missed us? Join us next Sunday as we dive into the Creation story together.

The St. Cecilia Choir is back!

This advanced treble choir, made up of 5th-12th graders, spent the weekend in retreat at St. James. They worked on team building, vocal technique, sight singing, music theory, and took a deep dive into their repertoire for the fall. We even had a "favorite composers" bracket to determine which composers to add to our wall of fame in the Choir Room. (Winners: Edward Elgar, Joanna Forbes L'Estrange, and Benjamin Britten!)

Many thanks to our proctors, Kaitlyn Kelly, Caroline Kelly, and Gilana Warren for their help in making things run smoothly. We can't wait for you to hear this incredible choir on September 13!

There's nothing like getting together to enjoy a delicious meal and fellowship with others. Every month, The Bad Girls Book Club does just that! On Monday, the group got together to discuss their most recent read: The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.

Join the group next month on Monday, September 21st for their next meeting where they'll go over The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife by Anna Johnston.
