We are Beth El, a sacred Jewish community for all who seek connection, meaning, and healing.

Back by popular demand, Jacob Magid, U.S. Bureau Chief for The Times of Israel, returns to Beth El for another timely conversation about Israel and the rapidly changing Middle East. This year, he'll be joined by Lucy Kurtzer-Ellenbogen, Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute and a longtime expert on Israeli-Palestinian affairs and U.S. policy in the region.

Their visit comes just two weeks after Israel’s October 27 national election — the country’s first national election since October 7, 2023. Together, Jacob and Lucy will help us make sense of the results and what comes next.

Last Friday, Beth El Hebrew Congregation's Executive Director Liz Bayer, and Cantor Jason Kaufman attended the Faith and Blue Prayer Breakfast: Kickoff Event hosted by the Alexandria Police Department (APD).

The breakfast brought together faith leaders and law enforcement leaders from Alexandria and across the National Capital Region for fellowship, prayer, and reflection.

Three years ago today, October 7th, we experienced unimaginable loss. Today we remember those who were murdered; we pray for those who survived and for all who still mourn, and we hold on to hope.

Tonight our Religious School will gather for a special observance of this day.

On Friday, our community is invited to join us for Shabbat services, where we will remember together.

We also remember how our congregation came together in the aftermath to raise funds for this Magen David Adom ambulance. Your generosity brought light, healing, and lifesaving care in a dark time. Thank you.

May the memories of those we lost be a blessing.

We love Simchat Torah! We had a great time celebrating on Sunday with our Religious School and community. Jewish joy is a beautiful thing!

"We're blessed when we come, we're blessed when we go..."

It's hard to believe it's been a week since Rabbi Joe Black visited our congregation. In this excerpt from Sunday morning, he sings "Congregational Blessing (We Return to You Again)" with our Religious School families. Such a special time with our congregation. (And if you're wondering about his reference to bunnies, you just had to be there! 🐇 🐇 🐇)

We were delighted to welcome Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins and clergy from around the city today for a gathering of the Alexandria City Interfaith Council, which is newly chaired by our own, Cantor Kaufman.

We are blessed to be in this historic city, where we come together across lines of difference to partner with one another, and with God, in the sacred work of building community.

From our community to yours. Cantor Jason Kaufman sings "God Was In This Place," at Kol Nidre services on September 20, 2026 at Beth El Hebrew Congregation. Song and lyrics by Beth Schafer; also featuring Eric Schnobrick on piano and Joshua Kowalsky on cello.

Join us on zoom next Tuesday evening at 8 pm for the RAC’s 30 day Election Action Plan. Our own, Cantor Kaufman will be speaking at the event!
