Albany Unitarian Universalist (aka First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany): You are welcome here!

The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany (Albany UU) brings together in one community a wide diversity of beliefs and backgrounds ranging from theistic to nontheistic to atheistic, from humanism to Unitarian Christianity, and including earth-centered and Eastern-focused practices. While we are not all on the same path, nor do we expect to arrive at the same destination, we have chosen to share our religious journey. The differences we bring to our spiritual search contributes to our respect for, and commitment to, liberal religious and ethical values in the larger community. We are also a growing, nurturing religious community bound by mutual respect and compassion; striving to establish a safe place where questions may be fearlessly addressed, the mind freed, and the soul nourished. We strive to be a caring community, supportive of the individuals within, involved in the world without. We commit ourselves to serving the wider community, working for peace and justice, and preserving the beauty and majesty of the world and all life. Whether by telephone or walking through the front door, we seek to make everyone feel our congregation can be their home too. Whatever your race, gender, affectional orientation, age, or family status, we welcome all free seekers of truth and meaning here.

This Sunday at Albany UU, we gather for our annual Service of Remembrance, honoring members and loved ones in our congregation who have died during the past year.

You are invited to bring a photo of someone you want to remember. We’ll provide a place to display photos during the service as we create a shared space of memory, love, and connection.

Please arrive a few minutes early if you’d like to set up your remembrance before the service begins.

Join us for this gentle time of reflection as we honor the people who have shaped our lives and remain part of our community through memory.

Tomorrow at Albany UU: Average Heroes

Not every hero saves the world. Some just keep showing up, make a difficult choice, stand up for someone else, or try to do the right thing when nobody is watching.

Rev. Sarah will explore fictional characters from comic books, television, and movies and consider what these familiar figures can teach us about courage, character, and how we live our own lives.

Come think with us about the stories we love, the characters who stay with us, and what they might have to teach us about being ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

Who are your heroes?

They may not wear capes, save the universe, or possess extraordinary powers. But fictional characters from comic books, television, and movies can still shape how we understand courage, responsibility, justice, and what it means to be a good person.

This Sunday, Rev. Sarah invites us to look at some of these average heroes and ask what we might learn from the characters who have influenced our popular culture and, in turn, influenced us.

What can fictional heroes teach us about being the heroes of our own ordinary lives?

Looking for a fun way to connect with your Albany UU community? Join the Congregational Life Team for Food, Friends & Fun! on Friday, October 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.

We’ll share a relaxed, Halloween-themed potluck with plenty of good food, conversation, and connection. We’ll also have a simple activity or craft for anyone who wants to get creative.

When suffering is difficult to witness, when we feel overwhelmed by the needs around us, or when compassion seems in short supply, how do we stay open rather than turning away?

What does compassion ask of us?

Compassion sits at the heart of many religious traditions, including Unitarian Universalism. We name it in our shared values of generosity and equity. But in a world that can make compassion feel difficult, exhausting, or even risky, how do we keep choosing it?

This Sunday, we’ll explore what it might mean to move toward suffering rather than away from it, and how we can invite more compassion into our everyday lives.
