Gabriel Fauré was a quiet revolutionary. Though reserved and modest, his music gently transformed the landscape of French music. One charming story tells of how, as a boy, Fauré would sneak away from his school duties just to play the harmonium in a nearby chapel. The melodies he created there, surrounded by silence and sunlight through stained glass, would stay with him for life.

Years later, as the director of the Paris Conservatoire, Fauré mentored a new generation of composers, including Maurice Ravel. He encouraged individuality, often defending his students’ bold ideas against more traditionalist faculty. Despite chronic deafness in his later years, Fauré continued to compose hauntingly beautiful pieces, including his famous Requiem, which he described not as a lament but as “a lullaby of death.”

Fauré never sought fame, yet his music remains timeless—serene, intimate, and deeply human.
