Upcoming Significance Of Ullambana Festival
This year, Ullambana Festival is happening in August, the 7th Lunar month, in Singapore, and is also commonly known as the Hungry Ghost Festival. On this day, many will honour their deceased loved ones with offerings and wholesome deeds that yield merits. For this auspicious event, we will be doing Smoke Offering Puja on 22nd Aug 2026, Saturday at 3:00pm to 4:00pm for purify the hungry ghosts, spirits and bardo beings so that they can be blessed for a better rebirth.
'Ullambana" is a Sanskrit word that holds the meaning of "rescuing those who are hanging upside down". This refers to the extreme suffering of the ghosts in the hells similar to being tormented by hanging upside down. The Ullambana Festival is thus performed especially for the liberation of those undergoing this painful suffering as hungry ghosts and enabling them to be reborn.
In addition, the Ullambana Festival allows us to dedicate merits to those whom we have created karmic debts in our past lives, so that they may undergo a good rebirth. Such a practice benefits both the living and the deceased.
