This is the Official page of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), a Roman Catholic Religious Order founded by St Dominic de Guzman and approved by Pope Honorius III on 22 Dec. 1216. The Order is made up of; Friars (priests and co-operator brothers), Contemplative Nuns, Apostolic Sisters under different congregations, members of the Secular Institutes, Priestly Fraternities and the Laity (both adults and youths). The Order is headed by the Master of the Order who is elected by the General Chapter of the Order every 9 years and who resides at the General Curia (Headquarters) of the Order at Santa Sabina, Rome. Founded to preach the Gospel and to combat heresy, the Order lives by four main principles or pillars – Ministry, Community, Study and Prayer. The members of the Order live together in community, sharing a common life. In community, they pray, contemplate and study together. These enable them to undertake the ministry of preaching the gospel.

New York City has honored the foundress of the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne by co-naming a section of East 68th Street “Rose Hawthorne Way.”

The dedication on October 1 marked 130 years since Rose welcomed her first patient into her own home. Beside Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and St. Catherine of Siena Church, the street now bears the name of a woman who devoted her life to caring for the sick poor.

Her mission continues today. The Hawthorne Dominicans provide care free of charge for people with terminal cancer, while Dominican friars serve the spiritual needs of hospital patients and their families.

“We thank you for this honor for our foundress,” said Mother Marie Edward, superior general. “Her work continues 130 years after she began.”

From September 30 to October 8, Dominican contemplative nuns from around the world gathered in Rome for the Assembly of the International Commission of Nuns.

Through prayer and shared reflection, the sisters strengthened the bonds of Dominican fraternity and considered the challenges and opportunities facing contemplative life today.

The assembly included an audience with Pope Leo XIV, discussions on formation for new prioresses and appointments to support greater collaboration across the Dominican Family.

Reflecting on the gathering, Sister María de Jesús Gil shared: “Being with Dominican nuns from all over the world whom I had never met before, yet feeling as though I had known them all my life. They are my sisters!”

United in prayer and in the mission of the Order of Preachers, the sisters continue to bear witness to the essential place of contemplation in the life of the Church.

Dominican huddle at the Vatican!

During the Vatican’s recent conference on “School and University Pastoral Ministry,” hosted by the Dicastery for Culture and Education, brothers and sisters of the Order had the chance to meet, celebrate the Dominican charism and share the joys and challenges of their apostolates in Catholic education!

Our brother, Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe, OP, was among the conference presenters. Brothers and sisters attended from all over the world, including Fr. Bernard Knapke, OP, a chaplain at the Catholic University of America.

The conference included an address by Pope Leo, who told participants,

“A significant number of young people today are as if paralysed by the fear of making mistakes, of not measuring up, of being misunderstood, of failing to live up to expectations. We live in a performance-driven culture that constantly compares and ranks people, sometimes in a ruthless manner. A misguided meritocracy ultimately fails to respect people. This is why many end up giving up before they have even tried.

Help the young people you meet to be agents of a new way of dwelling in the world, builders of humanity, of a more just society. Courage grows out of a covenant of trust: from the experience of someone who believes in you before you believe in yourself. Jesus did not choose the Twelve because they were courageous; He called them and, through His trust in them, enabled them. We must be able to repeat to our young people the words that the disciples addressed to the blind Bartimaeus: ‘Take heart; rise, He is calling you’ (Mk 10:49).”

May we remember our brothers and sisters laboring in the vineyard of Catholic education, as well as the young people they serve, in our prayers!

St. Martin de Porres, a Dominican lay brother (today called Cooperator Brothers), devoted his life to prayer, care for the sick, and service to the poor. His love for the Eucharist and compassion for those in need continue to inspire Dominicans and our friends throughout the world.

In preparation for his feast on Nov. 3, we invite you to pray this novena from Oct. 25 to Nov. 2. Through his intercession, let us ask God for a deeper faith and a more generous love of our neighbors.

Cooperator Brothers from across the Asia-Pacific Region gathered Oct 22-25, 38 for a conference in D**g Nai, Vietnam.

Fr. Vivian Boland, OP, gave a series of talks exploring the vocation of the Cooperator Brother through the lens of the Rosary. He reflected on how each set of mysteries (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious) helps brothers to structure and deepen their understanding of what it means to be a Cooperator Brother who “gives himself completely to following Christ in the way of St. Dominic.”

Following each talk, the 38 brothers present participated in small group discussions to offer personal reflections on their lives and vocation in the light of the Rosary. These reflections were then shared with the wider group during plenary sessions.

In addition to their common exploration of the vocation of the Cooperator Brother, the brothers enjoyed praying together, sharing meals, and recreation, thereby strengthening the bonds of fraternity.
