Today, Pope Leo XIV released his highly anticipated first encyclical, "Magnifica Humanitas" (Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence). In an extraordinary Vatican launch alongside top theologians and tech pioneers, the Church has planted a firm flag on the digital frontier.

The core message is an urgent wake-up call: the challenge we face today is not technological, but deeply anthropological. In a world increasingly automated, Pope Leo XIV reminds us that "human beings can never be reduced to a statistic, a profile, or an algorithm." What is human is always a mystery and a divine call. The encyclical tackles the erosion of public truth, the exploitation of human relationships by artificial companions, the future of human labor, and the severe ethical risks of autonomous warfare.

The Interior Frontier: One Year of Pope Leo XIV

On May 8, 2025, a new voice began to speak to the world from the Vatican balcony with three simple words: “Peace be with you.” One year later, we reflect on how Pope Leo XIV has used this Gospel key to open a new chapter in the life of the Church. His pontificate is not defined by policy, but by an anthropological shift—a reminder that the "City of God" is built within the "City of Man" through the orientation of our loves.

In a time of intense polarization, Leo XIV offers a prophetic path: he refuses a disembodied spirituality, yet avoids a clinical political program. Instead, he invites us to an active role in society, putting pressure on structures of sin while maintaining a heart reconciled with God. As we mark this first anniversary, we pray that his vision of a Church that grows by "attraction" continues to heal the chasms between us.

In the context of the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels (TAFF), which will be held in Santa Marta, Colombia, from 24 to 29 April 2026, the Jesuits for Climate Justice Campaign (JCJC) is presenting its Statement for COP31, based on the experience gained at Belém do Pará 2025 (COP30) and the urgent need to defend and promote climate justice in the name of faith.

The JCJC steering group continues its work by calling on all Jesuits and collaborators of the Society of Jesus to unite in caring for our common home. Together with many other men and women of goodwill, both within and outside the Church, we will promote and defend climate justice.

St. Peter Canisius: The Scholar of Hope and Healing

Today, April 27, the Society of Jesus celebrates the feast of St. Peter Canisius. In an age of deep division, he chose the path of the "gentle word" and the "printed page" to renew the faith of a continent.

The First Great Educator
Canisius was the first Dutchman to join the Jesuits, personally mentored by Peter Faber. He went on to found over 18 colleges and seminaries across Europe, believing that a well-formed mind is the best foundation for a sincere heart.

The Power of the Press
His "Triple Catechism" became a global phenomenon, printed in hundreds of editions. He didn't just teach the faith; he made it accessible, clear, and relevant to the ordinary person, earning him the title of Doctor of the Church.

A Ministry of Peace
Refusing the title of Bishop of Vienna to remain a humble preacher, Canisius famously said we must not cure patients with words that make them incurable. He sought common ground, proving that reconciliation is always possible through patience and charity.

On the first anniversary of his death, we remember our Pope, our brother in the Society of Jesus, with gratitude. Pope Francis brought the spirit of the Jesuits to the heart of the universal Church. As the first Jesuit to serve in the Chair of St Peter, his pontificate was marked by discernment, closeness to those on the margins, and a constant desire to seek and find God in all things.

In loving memory of him, we are launching a living memorial: a space where testimonies and reflections will be gathered over time, offering a fuller picture of his life, his ministry, and the Ignatian spirit that shaped his service.

His leadership was defined not only by its historic character, but by a distinctively Jesuit way of proceeding: attentiveness to the movements of the Spirit, a preference for simplicity, a call to the peripheries, care for our common home, and a vision of the Church as synodal and missionary, close to the wounds of the world.

The memorial begins with contributions from Jesuits, collaborators and friends who knew him personally and worked closely with him. These reflections do not aim to be comprehensive. They offer, rather, a series of personal glimpses into the man, the Jesuit, and the pastor.

This collection will continue to grow as new testimonies are added. We invite you to visit the memorial, read these reflections, and return often as new contributions are published.

Fr. General Arturo Sosa convokes the 72nd Congregation of Procurators — to be held in Indonesia in 2027. The first time this universal Jesuit assembly gathers in Asia. A historic, prophetic step toward the Global South.

This choice of location is a prophetic signal. By gathering in a land of immense religious diversity and rapid growth, we are reminded that our mission of reconciliation must always be lived at the "frontiers."

As we prepare, we are called to look through the lenses of collaboration and networking. How can our structures better support the Universal Apostolic Preferences? How is the Holy Spirit calling us to adapt so we can serve a wounded world more effectively?

Let us accompany the Procurators in prayer as they prepare to visit communities, listen to the hopes of our partners, and ultimately discern the "Magis"—the greater glory of God—for the future of the Society.

"Only through dialogue can we bring the war to an end."

In a week of extreme global tension, Pope Leo XIV has emerged as a clear voice for reconciliation. During his April 8 General Audience, the Holy Father welcomed the news of a ceasefire in the Middle East while reminding world leaders that a military pause is only the beginning.

As the Pope prepares to meet with world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, he continues to emphasize that there is no human experience—even the suffering of war—that God cannot redeem.

Let us join our voices with the Holy Father’s in praying that this fragile truce becomes a lasting peace.

The doors were locked, but He came anyway.

Easter is often painted in soft pastels, but the Gospel paints it in the colours of courage. The first Easter didn't happen in a vacuum of tranquility; it happened in a room heavy with trauma, failure, and the very real threat of violence.

Why this "Peace" is different:

It’s Wounded: When Jesus says "Peace," He shows them His hands and His side. His peace doesn't ignore the scars of the world; it carries them into the light of the Resurrection.

It’s Active: In the Jesuit tradition, we believe the Risen Christ is the "Consoler." He doesn't just give us peace to keep us comfortable; He gives it so we can "go out" and be agents of reconciliation in places of war and unrest.

It’s Unstoppable: No wall, no border, and no "locked door" of 2026 can keep the Spirit of the Risen Lord out.

In a world of "locked doors"—borders, fears, and conflicts—the Risen Christ offers the one gift we truly need: Peace. Not a peace that ignores suffering, but a peace that has survived it.

A Promise in the Midst of War: Good Friday 2026.

"Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." (Luke 23:43)

As we observe the Passion of the Lord, our eyes cannot help but turn to the "crucified" parts of our world today. We see the Cross in the faces of children in conflict zones, in families fleeing violence with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and in the exhausted eyes of those working for a peace that feels out of reach.

Why these words matter today:

Immediate Hope: Jesus didn't say "after the war ends" or "when things get better." He said today. Even in the darkest moments of human history, God's mercy is an immediate, present reality.

Radical Solidarity: On the Cross, Jesus was not a distant observer of suffering. He was a victim of it. He speaks to those in the trenches and the ruins not from a throne, but from the wood of the Cross.

This Friday, we don't just "remember" a past event. We stand with Christ in the suffering of 2026, holding onto the promise that even in the shadow of death, we are not alone.
