Kanishka Raffel, Archbishop of Sydney: This bill should unite Parliament

"In my letter [to the Premier], I appealed to the government with these words: “My hope is that those who have in-principle support for abortion rights, on whatever ground, would nevertheless see merit in supporting this bill to safeguard our shared commitment to the dignity and equality of girl children. Far from empowering women, s*x selective abortion reflects deeply entrenched cultural prejudice and belongs to crude discriminatory paradigms that contemporary and civilised societies have long sought to leave behind.”

"For Christians, this concern is grounded in our commitment to the sanctity of human life and the inherent equality of men and women. Scripture affirms that both male and female are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), a conviction that underpins our commitment to the dignity of every human.

"I urge Sydney Anglicans to join me in praying that the government will lead the Parliament in taking the small but vital step of supporting this bill."

Today is National Sorry Day, so we share our Cathedral's Prayer of Acknowledgement, that we reserve for special services and other occasions of major church or civic significance... like today. It expresses our sorrow and our hope.

“Our Lord and loving heavenly Father, we acknowledge that you are Creator, Owner and Sustainer of all that is. We acknowledge that in your sovereign Providence you gave custodianship of the land upon which we meet to the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. We acknowledge with sorrow the painful history between the Aboriginal people and the later settlers of this land, and we gratefully acknowledge that you have called many Indigenous brothers and sisters into your kingdom and service, in your church and in our nation. We pray that you may continue to work among us the reconciliation that is the gift of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.”

Wonderful to welcome our friends, the Sydney Street Choir into the Cathedral this morning. They were scheduled to sing outside in George St, but the weather put an end to that! They were joining our Mon-Tuesday Street Tea Cathedral ministry, run by Rob Elder.

Our Cathedral Kids Church coordinator and our Assistant Minister are super-excited to be unboxing a full, 3 year Betty Lukens felt Bible story set in near-new condition.

is back!

We are so thankful to our livestream friends from country Victoria, Paul and Margaret, for this very generous donation!

And given we are currently preaching through the accounts of Joseph at the end of Genesis, we note with pleasure that Betty Luken's Joseph figure wears a coat of many colours very similar to the Dean's Joseph Jacket that he wears for kids songs in church.
