A Prayer for Father's Day from Anglican Aid's PrayerMate feed... Heavenly Father, we praise you for the great love that you’ve lavished on us, and that we can be called your children.

Today, on this Father's Day, we pray for fathers in the world's poorest nations.

For those who are involved in Anglican Aid's projects: equip them with the resources and skills they need to provide for their families and help them to lead in love and self-sacrifice.

For those who are involved in ministry: in your mercy, help them to be above reproach and model Jesus' servant-heartedness as they lead others and their families.

For those who don't know you: transform their hearts so that they hear and respond to your great love shown through Jesus.

Father God, we also pray for people in the world's poorest nations who have lost their fathers, whether through conflict, disease, estrangement, neglect or other reasons. Comfort them in their grief today and show them that you are their always present and good father.

We ask all this in Jesus' name, Amen.

Right now, the Emergency Relief fund is empty – far from what’s needed for a rapid, compassionate response.

Unfortunately our organ recital for tomorrow (Thursday, 3rd Sept) at the Cathedral has had to be cancelled. Our next recital is on the 17th September featuring organ and piano duets with Nicholas Sutcliffe and Fiona Loader.

The Archbishop of Sydney has shared this prayer for Nepal and Tibet…

Sovereign Lord and heavenly Father, in whose hands are life and death, Our hearts ache for the families waiting for news of loved ones caught in the Nepal-Tibet flash floods.

Preserve life, O Lord. May many of the missing be found safe and returned to their homes. Grant strength, endurance and skill to emergency workers and search teams. May they reach many who are still alive.

We pray especially for Australian tourists caught up in this disaster, and for Nepali Australians with loved ones in the affected areas. In the midst of uncertainty, grant them courage. Be their refuge and strength in this time of distress and sorrow, O Lord. Amen.

A First Nations school in Sydney has had a high-profile visitor, with Governor-General Sam Mostyn sitting in on the class. The unique Kindergarten to Year Six initiative incorporates First Nations perspectives in their lessons and are looking to the future as they approach a big anniversary.

A Lawyer looks at the resurrection:

"...The text is powerfully understated. What did John see that made him believe? Clearly the whole mummy had not been removed. If the linen cloths had been unwound and only the body removed, it could have been the work of human hands. So the embalming cloths must have been intact, but with the weight of the ointment stiff with the cold of a Jerusalem Easter they had collapsed on themselves.

Sydney Anglicans join others in farewelling the late Ken Handley, a long-time esteemed Justice of the NSW Court of Appeal, and Chancellor of the Diocese of Sydney for two decades. The memorial service is today, Wednesday 19th, from 2:30pm, at our neighbouring parish of St James, King Street, "the lawyers' church", with Archbishop Kanishka Raffel preaching.

Our next free lunchtime band concert is tomorrow, this Wednesday, 19 August, from 12:30pm, featuring the Australian Army Band Sydney Brass, in combination with Army Organist Pte Sean Henderson, also one of our own Assistant Organists.

Here at the Cathedral, we think organ and brass is a match made in heaven!

Entrance is free, although donations to Cathedral ministry and maintenance appreciated.

You are also invited to browse around or beatiful building before or after the concert.

This Sunday (9 August) it's the City to Surf. Below is a Prayer for the City to Surf – and Bondi. Those attending the Cathedral for morning services should allow extra travel time, especially if coming from the eastern suburbs.

Loving Heavenly Father, you are the Creator of all things. It’s in you that we humans live and move and have our being.

With the City to Surf fun run in Sydney this Sunday, we thank you for the physical fitness you grant us and for chances to share in community events. We pray for the race’s safe conduct, and for those who work in the Police, Ambulance, St John’s First Aid, transport, and general race logistics, as they manage roads and public transport, and respond to medical and other race issues.

With the renewed attention this event brings to Bondi, we pray again for the recovery, protection and resilience of the local community there, and for Jewish people living in our city after the events of last year. Grant cohesion and peace to our community.

In your word, the Apostle says physical training is of some value, but training in godliness, via the gospel’s truth, holds promise for this life and the world to come. May many more Sydney-siders come to put their hope in your Son, the living God, who is Saviour of all who believe, and in whose name we pray. Amen.
