On November 1st, the Church lifts our eyes to a great multitude from every nation, race, people and tongue, standing before the throne in Revelation. John’s vision is not of a few spiritual giants, but of countless ordinary believers who have come through great tribulation and washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. This is the Communion of Saints, and we are invited to belong.

Dear Parishioners, Visitors and Friends,

This Sunday, Scripture places us in a vineyard. Isaiah sings of a friend who dug the soil, cleared the stones, and planted the choicest vines. He did everything possible for his vineyard, yet it yielded wild grapes. The song ends with a heart breaking question: what more could I have done?

“It's never too late for a metanoia”

Dear Parishioners, Visitors and Friends,

This Sunday's Gospel gives us one of Jesus' shortest but sharpest parables: a father asks two sons to work in the vineyard. One says "no" but later changes his mind and goes. The other says, "yes, sir" and never shows up. Jesus asks the chief priests and elders which son did the father's will - and the answer is obvious. What's uncomfortable is who Jesus says gets there first: not the ones with the right words, but the ones who let their lives be changed...

There is something almost offensive about today's Gospel. A landowner hires workers at dawn, and again at nine, noon, three, and five - and at day's end pays them all the same wage. Those who bore the whole day's heat grumble, not unreasonably:
this isn't fair. And they are right. It isn't fair.
It is something else entirely
- it is grace...

“The Cross Is Not a Detour”

Dear Parishioners, Visitors and Friends,

Last week Peter was the rock on which Christ builds his Church. This week he is called Satan. The lectionary allows no cushion between the two: in the very same scene, the man just praised for his confession of faith immediately tries to talk Jesus out of the cross. Peter is not being wicked. He is doing something more familiar protecting someone he loves from pain, using perfectly reasonable human logic. Jesus' sharp reply tells us that human logic and the logic of God are not always the same thing...
