It's 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 and the SAJM participated in a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦. In addition we heard two excellent presentations: a talk by author Joline Young on uncovering neglected histories and a presentation by David Larsen from Africa Media Online that centred on aligning the digitisation process with the vision, mission and strategic objectives of the organisation.

We are pleased to share our latest Collection:

The Robertson Hebrew Congregation Collection.

This small collection of photographs and textual documents is housed at the Kaplan Centre archive and has been digitised and uploaded for display due to the interest in both the resident listing beginning in 1853 and the photographs, some taken as early as 1905.

The South African Jewish Museum and Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies are excited to announce the addition of an incredible collection of historical photographs to https://sajmarchives.com/

Thanks to a digital sharing initiative in partnership with the International Centre for Litvak Photography, a small, nonprofit organisation in Lithuania that’s dedicated to the location, documentation, and long-term preservation of all surviving prewar Lithuanian Jewish photographs around the world, https://sajmarchives.com/ has been able to enrich its archive with two wonderful series of family photographs, both hidden away by Lithuanian Jewish families shortly before they were murdered, and both of them discovered in attics in different parts of Kaunas seven decades later.

Featuring almost 200 images of Lithuanian Jewish family life between approximately 1910 and 1941 and including photographs of almost 1,000 known and unknown people in Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, the United States, Mozambique and South Africa, the two series have been shared as part of the International Centre for Litvak Photography’s long-established policy of reaching new audiences. It’s also hoped that visitors to https://sajmarchives.com/ might be able to shed some new light on the scores of men, women and children that appear in the photographs and that still haven’t been unidentified.
