A reminder for this coming Tuesday 26, May @ 19h00 - Our second Table Talks online gathering.

This time with with Prof. Lodewyk Sutton on: Reading violence in the Bible for today.

We live in an increasingly violent world. Several wars are raging. Can war or violence be justified by a particular reading of the Bible? Do we worship a violent God? How then should we read the “violent” texts in the Bible?

Will you join in?

Prayer and the Spirit
Where do you feel "spiritually dry" right now? Ask the Spirit to flow there.

Holy Spirit, we cannot pray without You. Our souls are often parched. Come into our weakness like the rain upon dry ground. Pray within us when words fail. Fill Your Church with the courage to speak and the wisdom to serve. Amen.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit... will teach you all things." — John 14:26

"Come, Holy Spirit, God and Lord! Be all Thy graces now out-poured on each believer’s mind and heart; Thy fervent love to them impart. Lord, by the brightness of Thy light, Thou in the faith dost men unite of every tongue and every nation; we, therefore, sing with exultation: Alleluia!" — Martin Luther

Prayer and the Kingdom
Where did you see a "glimpse of the Kingdom" (mercy, justice, or joy) today?

Lord Jesus, strengthen our hope. When we are tempted by cynicism, remind us of Your coming Kingdom. Let our lives be a "preview" of the world as You intended it to be. Let we share Your justice and mercy. Amen.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness." — Matthew 6:33

"He who prays for the coming of the Kingdom of God is necessarily praying for the world’s renewal. As the sun rising drives away the darkness, so the Kingdom of God within us drives away the shadows of sin. Let us pray that God’s righteousness may reign in our hearts today." — Origen of Alexandria

Looking back over these eleven days, what small change have you noticed in your heart?

Prayer That Changes

Lord, do not let us leave this time of prayer the same as we entered it. Transform our hearts, burn away our selfishness and refine our character. Shape us to reflect Your love. Amen.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed." — Romans 12:2

"We use words in prayer so that we may be reminded to consider what we are asking for. God does not change when we pray, but we are changed. By the very act of seeking Him, our desire is expanded so that we may be capable of receiving what He is prepared to give." — St. Augustine

Who in your immediate circle is carrying a cross alone today? Where is your compassion needed?

Praying for the Suffering

"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these... you did it to me." — Matthew 25:40

"The bread which you do not use is the bread of the hungry; the garment hanging in your wardrobe is the garment of him who is naked. The shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor. You do wrong to everyone you could help, but fail to help." — St. Basil the Great
God of Compassion, remember the sick, the grieving, and the forgotten. Do not let us be content with comfortable lives while others suffer. Move our hands to match our prayers. Open our eyes to suffering and move us to mercy. Amen.

Is there a "closed door" in your life that you are still trying to force open?

Lord, where our plans have failed and our maps have led us astray, teach us to trust Your wisdom. Shape our desires to match Your holy purposes, for Your ways are higher than ours. Amen.

= The Freedom of Surrender =

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." — Matthew 6:10

"Father, Thy will be done, not the will of the devil and of our enemies, nor of anything that would persecute Your holy Word or hinder Your kingdom. Grant that we may bear with patience and overcome whatever we must suffer on its account, so that our poor flesh may not yield or fall away. Let Your will succeed, though the world rages against it." — Martin Luther (Large Catechism)
