MOVING FORWARD

Philippians 3:10 - 4:1

To fulfil the call, purpose and destiny God has for our lives individually and as a church, moving forward and learning how is key.

Along the journey, there will be many reasons presented to us to stop, quit or go back instead of moving forward.

Knowing how to move forward is key especially in times when camping or going back seems better.

Mostly, it’s in times of discouragement, disappointment and disillusionment where camping where you are or going back to the life God saved you from can seem more enticing.

Don’t fall for it.

There are 4 Biblical Keys from the Word of God and from the life of Paul the Apostle in MOVING FORWARD

To Move Forward effectively, we must:

1. Be Father - Conscious

Romans 8:35-38

▪︎ Be anchored and fully secure in your Heavenly Fathers love for you
▪︎ Know that in Christ, you are not a slave but a son/daughter of God, deeply loved!
▪︎ When we know and experience God’s wonderful love for us, we are able to move forward, trusting fully in the One Who loves us even when we don’t understand fully.

2. Be Forgetful

Philippians 3:13-14
1 Corinthians 13:5

▪︎ Be Forgetful of the Past.
▪︎ We learn from mistakes but we don’t dwell there.
▪︎ When you fall, don’t stay down. Get up again and keeping going!
▪︎ Many people stay stuck remembering the past and longing for the past.
▪︎ Love keeps no record of wrongs and even God remembers our sins no more!

3. Be Forgiving

2 Timothy 4:16-17
Colossians 3:13

▪︎ Paul the Apostle spent his life serving the Lord and serving others unselfishly
▪︎ In his moment of need at his trial, no one was with him. Everyone had forsaken him.
▪︎ Instead of living in bitterness and resentment, he says “I don’t charge it to their account”
▪︎ Learn to make space and be tolerant of the weaknesses of others in the church
▪︎ Forgive others as Christ has forgiven you

4. Be Future & Forward Focused

Hebrews 12:1-3
Ecclesiastes 7:10

▪︎ Christ could endure the pain of the cross because of the joy set before Him
▪︎ His Vision of where He was going was greater than His present pain
▪︎ The Vision of your future must be better than where you are to move forward
▪︎ Be convinced that God’s plans for you are good despite what it feels like or looks like now!
▪︎ All things are working together for your good!

SERIES: What Lies Ahead
MESSAGE: How to Live Effectively as a Christian in the Last Days - Sunday 16 July
Scriptures: 2 Timothy 3:1-5; 1 Timothy 4:1-5, Romans 12:1-3

Pastor Ian taught on 7 Keys to living effectively as a Christian in the last days before the Rapture of the Church

Why is this important? Because without a clear understanding of the future from the Word of God, we won't have context on how we are to prepare and live for the Lord now.

I. We must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be born again - John 3:1-7; 2 Corinthians 13:5

II. We must develop a healthy private and public devotional life - Acts 2:38-47

III. We must walk in intentional obedience to the Lord regardless of the personal cost - Matthew 10:37-39; Luke 14:25-33

IV. We must gather with born again believers more often than usual - Hebrews 10:23-25

V. We must become useful in the Kingdom of God using our time, talents and treasure to serve the Lord - 1 Peter 4:10; Matthew 6:24-26

VI. We must become bold witnesses of the Lord Jesus Christ, sharing the Gospel and winning souls to Christ - 2 Timothy 1:7-8; Proverbs 11:30

VII. We must pursue the Lord and eternal things more than the things of this world - 1 John 2:15-17; Colossians 3:1-4

When The Journey Seems Too Long - Sunday 25 June

1 Kings 19:1-8

Last night, we looked at the Prophet Elijah who, two chapters earlier, Interceded and ended a drought, fought off and killed 450 prophets of Baal but ended up running into the wilderness of despair, discouragement and hopelessness at the threats of Jezebel to kill him.

This mighty man of God experienced despair and discouragement and the journey seemed too long for him.

Maybe in your life, the journey seems too long and you're at the place of complete despair.

We looked at key lessons from this passage and how to respond in our lives when the journey seems to long.

1. Reject Condemnation

▪︎ Elijah said "...I'm no better than my ancestors .." Self-pity and condemnation crept in. There are often self pity and self condemning conversations you're having with yourself in these times.

▪︎ He left his servant in Beersheba and traveled a days journey into the wilderness ALONE

▪︎ When discouraged, we often tend to isolate ourselves from all fellowship and people. This might seem justified but it's wrong and not wise.

Proverbs 18:1 AMP

He who [willfully] separates himself [from God and man] seeks his
own desire, He quarrels against all sound wisdom.

2. Rest in God's Love

▪︎ God is faithful and merciful to Elijah while sleeping under the juniper tree.

▪︎ In his hopelessness, the Angel of the Lord TOUCHES him and feeds him

▪︎ God is still faithful and merciful to us in these moments. He still displays His love and care.

▪︎ We can rest in His love, even in moments of despair in our lives.

▪︎ But, His aim is not to leave us under the juniper tree forever. He ministers to us for the journey and for purpose.

3. Receive God’s Provision

▪︎ 3 times the Angel of the Lord provided both spiritually and materially for Elijah.

▪︎ God will often supply just what we need in those times to keep going.

▪︎ He knows what we need to be refreshed/revived and will provide what we need.

▪︎ Receive His Provision

4. Rely on God’s Power

▪︎ The Angel of the Lord told Elijah that the journey will be too long for him.

▪︎ He needs to rely on God's power, not his own

▪︎ Paul says, "His grace is sufficient for me for when I'm weak, then I am strong in HIS strength"

▪︎ When we've come to the end of ourselves, we've come to the beginning of His strength!

5. Return to the Church

▪︎ Where was Elijah going? To Mount Sinai, the mountain where God revealed His covenant to Israel, the mountain where His power was displayed and His voice heard.

And many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house (temple) of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us His ways And that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go out from Zion And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem

Isaiah 2:3 AMP

▪︎ Today, in the New Covenant, the mountain of the Lord figuratively speaking is Mount Zion, the New Covenant of Grace where Jesus was crucified and the local church.

▪︎ Elijah forgot God's power, God's provision and God's Presence in His discouragement and needed to be reminded of this again!

▪︎ What happens at Mount Sinai? God displays His power and His Presence to Elijah, sends Him back into purpose and gives Him Divine Direction!

▪︎ Elijah goes back and the rest is history. He finishes his race.

▪︎ We need to return to Mount Zion. We need to return to the church, we need to return to the Finished work of the Cross and find our place in the Local Church again

▪︎ It's here where God's voice will be heard, His power revealed, His Presence made known again, His purpose birthed in your heart again and where you will finish your race strong.

▪︎ Jesus is building His church. Without His church, we die in the wilderness, succumbing to discouragement and hopelessness.

▪︎ With the church, our perspective changes. We see God's power greater than our problems, we find strength and purpose again which inspires us and we're able to continue our race and finish well.

Maybe you're where Elijah found himself. Isolated, alone, under a tree in the wilderness, ready to quit on life, quit on God, quit on your purpose.

Don't quit. Take a pitstop. Your journey might seem too long but it's not over.

You're not ready to die yet even though you might think it's better. Your purpose is not done yet.

1. Reject Condemnation and feelings of self-pity

2. Rest in God's Love. Allow your Father to minister His love to you again.

3. Receive God's Provision. It might not be all your heart desires now but it will be enough to keep you going on your journey. Thank Him for His provision!

4. Rely on God's Power. It's time to surrender control to Him and rely on His power. He can do much more through His strength than what you can do in your own strength.

5. Return to the Church. Get back to the local church where His voice is heard through His Word, His power is revealed and His Presence

Fathers, today we appreciate and honor you!

As dads, there are many responsibilities that weigh heavily upon our shoulders, juggling between career, marriage, parenting, and ensuring that our families are well-provided for. But in the midst of all these real-life situations, always remember that you’re not alone; your heavenly Father cares about every detail, the worries on your mind, and the challenges you go through.

He is your Abba Father, the One who created you, loves you unconditionally, and will surely orchestrate everything to work out for yours and your family’s good.

Even as your children look to you for wise advice, provision for their daily needs, and a shoulder to lean on, know that you too can look to your Abba Father and draw from His source of endless supply.

Bring all the tithes (the whole tenth of your income) into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and prove Me now by it, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. [Mal. 2:2.]

And I will rebuke the devourer [insects and plagues] for your sakes and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground, neither shall your vine drop its fruit before the time in the field, says the Lord of hosts.

And all nations shall call you happy and blessed, for you shall be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts. ---- Malachi 3:10‭-‬12 AMPC

Is anyone among you suffering? He must pray. Is anyone joyful? He is to sing praises [to God]. Is anyone among you sick? He must call for the elders (spiritual leaders) of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven ---- James 5:13‭-‬15 AMP
