If you find yourself hurt, disillusioned, or just plain mad at the the Church today, take a step back and think about this:
The Church was created and initiated by the Creator of the universe based solely on relationship with Him! In the new covenant the law was fulfilled by an incredible, gracious, humble, and loving Savior in Jesus Christ and the 2nd century Church began. It began because of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Not a gifted speaker, not a beautiful place to gather, not specific beliefs on topics that may or may not have anything to do with salvation, simply Jesus!
Look at Acts 2, it’s so refreshing. Peter preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ and this is the response:
Acts 2:37-42 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
What a cool placed to be! Simply “pieced to the heart” first by Jesus and His birth, death, and resurrection life. Then moving into community and processing the things of the Lord together.
Unfortunately the goal sometimes shifts and people get caught in the unfortunate(and often unintentional) relational downfall of focus on the thing rather than focus on Him who created the Church.
I’m really sorry if this has happened to you! I would say most of us have been there and have even been the cause of some of those hurts due to the distractions of the thing.
