Today we commemorate the Four Chaplains, who gave their lives on February 3, 1943, aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester during World War II.

When the ship was struck by a torpedo and began to sink, Reverend George L. Fox, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Father John P. Washington, and Reverend Clark V. Poling helped evacuate wounded and frightened soldiers, distributed life jackets, and prayed with those facing death. When the supply of life jackets ran out, each chaplain gave away his own.

Representing Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish traditions, the Four Chaplains stood together—united not by uniformity, but by faith expressed through sacrificial love. Their final moments were marked by calm courage, prayer, and care for others above themselves.

Their witness remains a profound example of chaplaincy at its best: presence in crisis, faith without coercion, and love that holds even unto death.
May their memory continue to inspire all who are called to serve.
