Last week, a group of Temple Micah members and staff attended the annual Heart of Caring Luncheon, a fundraising event for Iona Senior Services, held at Washington Hebrew Congregation.

Founded in 1975, Iona Senior Services - formerly Iona House - provides a myriad of services for DC residents aged 60 and older, primarily in Wards 2, 3 and 4. Throughout the decades, Micah members have participated in social, recreational, educational, philanthropic and many volunteer initiatives. Care management, caregiver support and other clinical services have also been invaluable resources during times of need. Last fall,Temple Micah became a Congregational Sponsor in recognition of Iona's 50th Anniversary Gala. We continue to explore additional ways to expand our partnership.

Join us for Erev Shavuot this Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m., (with a dairy oneg featuring cheesecake bites starting at 6:00 p.m).

On Erev Shavuot, we mark the end of the 49-day Omer count, and the revelation of the Torah at Mount Sinai. The service includes the ritual reading of the Ten Commandments, the singing of Hallel, and reflections from our rabbis. Yizkor will be read.

This year especially, we are drawn to give extra voice to the traditional reading for Shavuot: the Book of Ruth. Ruth is the righteous immigrant and paradigmatic convert, the outsider who becomes central to the Jewish story. In a time when immigrants are too often met with suspicion rather than welcome, Ruth’s story asks us to consider what it means to open a community to the stranger.

We have some exciting news to share from the Temple President and Vice President!

Earlier this year, the Board decided to hire a two-year Rabbinic Fellow in order to meet our congregation's needs as we enter this new chapter in our synagogue’s story. We are now thrilled to share that the Board has accepted the Rabbinic Fellow Search Committee’s unanimous recommendation to hire Rabbi Kelly Whitehead for that role.

Many of you may remember Rabbi Whitehead from her time as the Tisch Rabbinic Intern at Temple Micah in the summer of 2023. Her familiarity with and understanding of Temple Micah was just part of what impressed the committee, and us personally, in this process. We were blown away by her thoughtfulness, creativity, commitment to social justice, compassion, and enthusiasm.

Rabbi Whitehead, in her position as Rabbinic Fellow, will be a full part of the clergy team, working together with Rabbis Slakman and Frank and under our new Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Beraha....Rabbi Whitehead will begin in her new role on July 1.

Mazal tov and welcome, Rabbi Whitehead!
