It is Pride Month. And FCC Chair Brendan Carr wants TV ratings to label shows that include transgender and nonbinary characters as if they are dangerous content. Trans people are our neighbors and our fellow congregants. More than 5 million children in this country have LGBTQ+ parents. They are not a danger to anyone.

We're happy to announce that this summer, instead of having one Summer Preaching Fellow, we’ll have two! Hannah Mills and Liz Pruchnicki have both served as fellows before, and it’s a pleasure to welcome them back.

Here’s how Hannah and Liz introduce themselves.

Hannah Mills is a Staff Chaplain at Johns Hopkins Sibley Memorial Hospital. She is a Candidate for Ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA). She is a graduate of Eastern University with her B.A. in Psychology and of Union Theological Seminary of the City of New York with a concentration in Pastoral Theology. Hannah has participated and facilitated a variety of ministry experiences including unhoused outreach support, hunger awareness, youth engagement, prison ministry, interfaith and anti-racist dialogue, and Christian education for all ages. She loves to travel, bake, read, write, garden, listen to music, and spend time with friends. She is very thankful for the warm welcoming community of Cleveland Park Congregational UCC and is thrilled to return to learn more about where God is moving in the congregation and in the world.

Elizabeth Pruchnicki completed her Master of Theological Studies at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C and also holds a Master of Arts in International Relations from The Maxwell School at Syracuse University. She serves as an Elder at Rockville Presbyterian Church and can be found any given Sunday morning preaching at a PC(USA) church in the Washington, DC, area. During the week, she is the Assistant Director of Admissions and Recruitment at Wesley Theological Seminary where she helps students discern their vocation and call to ministry.

Leaving this here for myself today, and also for you, in case you might need it in these days. So many blessings to you, with deep gratitude.

BLESSING OF HOPE

So may we know
the hope
that is not just
for someday
but for this day—
here, now,
in this moment
that opens to us:

hope not made
of wishes
but of substance,

hope made of sinew
and muscle
and bone,

hope that has breath
and a beating heart,

hope that will not
keep quiet
and be polite,

hope that knows
how to holler
when it is called for,
hope that knows
how to sing
when there seems
little cause,

hope that raises us
from the dead—

not someday
but this day,
every day,
again and
again and
again.
