A message from CHUMC member Kathleen Smith:

I wanted to invite you to a book event that will be held at CHUMC on the evening of Wednesday, June 24th, from 7pm to 8:30pm. I will be interviewing a colleague of mine, Dr. Jenny Brown, who has a new book out called The Parenting Paradox: Loving Our Children By Giving Them Space to Grow.

Dr. Brown was the founder and director of the Family Systems Institute in Sydney, Australia, and she's a respected voice in the fields of family systems and child mental health. Her latest is a lovely book about the intensity of parenting in today's world, and how parents begin to shift out of cycles of worry, over-involvement, and self-doubt.

Happy Pride beloveds. June is Pride month and we celebrate Pride because no one should have to wonder if they belong. We celebrate Pride because joy is sacred-and when our Q***r ( q***r is a word that has been reclaimed as positive by the LGBTQIA+ community) siblings thrive, so does the church. We celebrate Pride because dignity is still being fought for and the Church does not get to sit that out. We celebrate Pride because every church should be a church for every child of God.

At Capitol Hill UMC, we will be celebrating Pride throughout June. Each Sunday in worship during June we will hear a testimony from one of our q***r beloved siblings about why Pride is important to celebrate. Our building will be awash in rainbows this month.

The beloved people of God called United Methodists of the Baltimore-Washington Conference have convened for the 242nd session and carried on. We have worshipped and workshopped, debated and voted on legislation, remembered those who’ve joined the ancestral cloud of witnesses and consecrated those called to ordained service. Capitol Hill UMC was well represented by Rev Dr Martina and Rev Stephanie as clergy and Jerome Hinkle and Natalie Walker as laity. At the ordination service this afternoon Jerome came forward during the altar call saying yes to a future of service to the UMC. He was surrounded and prayed over by many folks. Thank you Natalie and Jerome for representing CHUMC. A report summarizing the conference will happen in worship and the enews in the next few weeks.

Also the appointments have been set and I am continuing at CHUMC for my 6th year. I am grateful to be on the journey with each of you.

The advocacy of CHUMC and many others worked. The DC Human Services Committee voted to fully restore funding to Shirley’s Place Day Center during their budget markup! This victory happened because of you. Whether you sent emails, made phone calls, mobilized your neighbors, or kept us in your thoughts, your advocacy directly protected this vital resource for our community. We are especially grateful to Councilmember Allen for transferring funds from his committee to make this possible, and to Councilmember Frumin for his steadfast support. While the FY27 budget requires a final vote from the full Council, we are highly confident this funding is secure.

Thank you people of CHUMC. The Day Center is a vital resource for our neighbors.

Save the date. Let’s celebrate Juneteenth together in service. This is a great service opportunity for all ages where we will learn about the history of Juneteenth and help with the upkeep of DC’s oldest remaining intact Black cemetery. Join the community from CHUMC going to Remember - Learn -Serve

Grateful for his life and witness.
