September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. For LGBTQ+ people, this is real life, not a statistic on a page.

The Trevor Project's research is clear: LGBTQ+ young people are not inherently at higher risk because of who they are. They're placed at higher risk by rejection, stigma, and the absence of affirming spaces. The same research shows the opposite is just as true — where affirmation exists, so does life.

That's the work the United Methodist Reconciling Ministries Network exists to do. Every congregation that chooses to see LGBTQ+ people as sacred, as fully made in the image of God — every leader who says "you belong here" and means it — is doing holy work.

This month, we're here to remind you that our work does not stop until every church is a church for every child of God.

Grateful that Capitol Hill United Methodist Church is a beloved community of affirmation for sacred LGBTQ+ people.

On Sunday, August 30th, we had a farewell blessing, at Capitol Hill UMC for the lovely Darr family who are moving out of the country for work. We will miss them and the many gifts they have offered CHUMC. We pray for their new life in another place and know that they will be a blessing to another neighborhood and church.

For five Sundays we sat at tables making passion pouches together in community. It was a sacred time of joyful creativity and connection to each other. Our lovely pouches included our picture, a scripture or saying that speaks to us, a poem we wrote about our passions, a letter of affirmation to self, and beads for a handle. We experienced the calming focus of creating and the joy of creating in community. Thank you to Rev Dr Martina and art therapists Adela, Sarah and Christal who assisted, affirmed and calmed us.

Lord in your love. Hear our prayers.

In response to the catastrophic flash flooding that occurred along the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, UMCOR is awarding a solidarity grant to support United Mission Nepal as they aid impacted communities in Dhading and Nuwakot districts with emergency food and non-food item (NFI) assistance. Alongside this grant, UMCOR is continuing to explore opportunities for further response through our partner networks and local assessments.

Please remain in prayer for these communities as the toll of this disaster continues to worsen. Authorities now report that at least 579 people have died and 1,924 people remain missing, with these numbers expected to grow as some areas remain inaccessible. Search and rescue teams are still working to reach communities cut off by the disaster, with damaged roads, landslides, and communications disruptions hindering relief operations and making it difficult to fully assess needs.

We lift up this call for prayer, presence, and continued accompaniment from the Rev. Jung Eun Grace Moon, general secretary of the Christian Conference of Asia, ecumenical partner of The United Methodist Church: “In this time of profound loss and suffering, may God’s comforting presence draw near to all those affected, embrace those who grieve, strengthen those who search and serve, shelter those who have lost their homes and kindle a light of hope amid the darkness.”

All the trumpets are sounding for Dolly Parton on the other side. We will have to do another sermon series on Jesus and Dolly Parton. This Sunday at our 10:30am service we will enjoy some of her songs.

We borrowed Dolly from Mr. Henry’s restaurant. Look at all the beloved Chumc folks with Dolly, such good memories.

You still have one week to come make your own passion pouch. Next Sunday August 30th at 9am with Rev Dr Martina and three other amazing art therapists. Come and enjoy great company and creativity. Creating is an act of joy and resistance.

Each week, members of the CHUMC staff and servant leadership team will share short video reflections on the life of our church, what's happening in the world around us, and the ways faith meets us in everyday life. Look for these heartfelt messages in our weekly Community Prayers.
