Joe spent 30 years on the radio, never seeing the people he was talking to. At Foundry's ID Ministry, he found the opposite: a way to help someone right in front of him. The ministry walks DC neighbors through getting a birth certificate, a DC ID, or a Social Security card, often starting with almost nothing. It's direct aid and advocacy in its most practical form. Jane has volunteered with DC Books to Prisons for years, right here in Foundry's basement. Last year alone, the ministry sent over 6,000 bundles of books to individual prisoners across the country, often answering a single handwritten letter that might be the only mail someone gets for months.

This is faith in action: strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, one book at a time. Watch Jane's story, then bring your gently used paperbacks or sign up to volunteer.

Look closely at the Sabbath commandment. God says to people who had been slaves, whose worth was measured by their productivity: you can stop. And not only you. Your children. Your workers. The immigrant living among you. Even your animals get to stop.

Everybody gets to rest.

Now imagine taking that seriously in a culture where people work multiple jobs and still can't make ends meet, where paid leave is a luxury for many, where productivity so easily becomes the measure of human worth.

We can turn even the commandments into monuments. Into idols. Things to display and defend rather than a way of life to practice.

Our hope is not in the mandated public posting of the commandments. Our hope is in the public living of them. Because the commandments set us free to live together in such a way that nobody has to be enslaved, exploited, violated, betrayed, robbed, lied about, or consumed by another person's greed.

God says no to the things that enslave us, that diminish us, that destroy life together, so that we can say yes to the things that make life free and whole for everyone.

The thou shalt not is not the point. The life God is protecting, the freedom God is protecting, the dignity God is protecting: that is the point.

No to idols and their empty promises protects a yes to trusting the God whose word is good.

No to endless work, to treating ourselves or anyone else as machines for production, is a yes to Sabbath, to rest, to delight, and to remembering that the world does not stop turning because you take a break.

No to taking what belongs to another is a yes to building a community where theft is unnecessary because all have enough.

Every no protects a yes. Every boundary opens space for life to be lived well.

That is roughly 500 pounds a commandment.

What an appropriate mental image. Because many of us carry a sense that the commandments are heavy and dangerous, hanging over people like an ominous threat, just waiting to crush you the minute you step out of line.

Lift those heavy laws. Carry those burdensome commandments. Three sets of ten repetitions every other day. Weightlifting morality.

But look at how the text actually begins. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

God is no dictator. God is the one who brought the people out of slavery, who unburdened them from unjust laws, who gave the people their freedom.

Maybe a preacher used that moment to shame you, pressure you, beat you down, or tell you that you were not good enough. That you had to change who you are.

The wound is real. I will not pretend otherwise because I experienced it too.

But the body we are being built into is a resurrected body with scars. The risen Christ did not hide his scars. He held them out. Put your finger here. Do not doubt but believe.

Your wound from the church is not a disqualification. It can be the very proof that you survived, because you held on to the love of God and came back.

You do not have to be all healed to be sent. You only have to be here.

God didn't just say stay with me. God said go. But not to a far mission field across the ocean. Not to fill a gap because the pastors are too busy.

Go where you are supposed to go. Go to your home. Go to your family. Go to your workplace on Monday morning. Go to your support group because the members need to see you there.

Don't just say I'm going to pray for you. Say I'm praying with you right now, this moment.

Go serve not the kingdom of status and money and gold, but serve the Lord. And when God asks whom shall I send, all of us should be able to say, humbly but terrified but truthfully: here I am, send me.
