All of us are being formed by something. The news forms us. Social media forms us. Fear forms us. Our families and culture form us.

The question is not whether we are being formed. The question is by what.

Through worship and prayer, through Scripture and communion, through service and generosity, God does what only God can do. God transforms us. Fills us. And little by little, sometimes so gradually we hardly notice, our lives begin to move at a different impulse.

The impulse of love. The impulse of mercy. The impulse of grace.

One day we are traveling down the road, and we discover we are no longer merely trying to love. By the grace of God, we have begun to move at the impulse of God's love.

That is the goal.

They devoted themselves.

We almost always jump right past that line. But Luke says they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of the bread and the prayers. Not occasionally. Not when it was convenient. Not whenever they felt inspired.

They devoted themselves.

And over time, something happened. Their possessions became less important than their neighbors needs. Their tables became larger. Their hearts became more generous. Their lives became more joyful.

They were not conformed to their age. They were transformed.

I grew up before car seat laws. Before seatbelt laws. Putting one on wasn't something I thought about, so every time I got in the car I had to remind myself. Sometimes I forgot. Sometimes I remembered halfway down the road.

And then one day I realized I already had it on. I hadn't thought about it at all. What had once felt like a hassle had become instinct.

That is exactly how the Christian life works. You may not start out loving the practice. But you practice because of what the practice is shaping you to become.

June 21 is Pastor Jonathan Brown's last Sunday with us before he and his family head to Atlanta, and we are pulling out ALL the stops.

Pastor Jonathan will preach at both the 9:00 AM and 11:15 AM worship services, then at 10:00 AM we're gathering between services for one big, joyful celebration in his honor.

And yes, there's a dress code. Kind of.

Sneakers welcome. Crocs encouraged. Hawaiian shirts? Absolutely. Graphic tees, superhero gear, wrestling merch? Bring it. This is a celebration, and Pastor Jonathan would want you to be comfortable. (The man organized a Chili Cookoff AND a Faith & Comic Books small group. He knows who he is.)

Come ready to laugh, share stories, and send him and his family off with the full warmth of the Foundry community behind them.

The world says there isn't enough. But God is rich in mercy.

The world says you have to earn your place. But God saves by grace.

The world says shame gets the last word. But God is great in love.

The world says what is dead is dead. But God makes us alive.

The world says you're on your own. But God makes us alive together.

The world says this is all there is. But God is still creating, still shaping, still calling life from dust, still making all things new.

The story was going one way.
But God.

The world understands transaction. But God operates through grace. And maybe that is why grace is sometimes so difficult for us to receive. Because we know how to earn. We know how to achieve. We know how to keep score.

Some versions of Christianity have reinforced exactly that impulse. Behave yourself and God will bless you. Believe the right things and God will reward you. Get your life together and God will finally accept you. Doubt and God will reject you. Fail and God will turn away.

But Paul will have none of it.

By grace you have been saved. Not by following the rules or checking the boxes or through achievement or merit. The story is not about keeping score.
By grace, you have been saved. Grace.

Maybe you have carried shame for something you did years ago. Maybe you have convinced yourself that some part of your life is beyond repair. Maybe you have spent so long trying to prove your worth that you have forgotten who you are underneath all the striving. Maybe you have watched the news lately and wondered whether cruelty and greed and fear are simply winning.

The story goes one way.

But God. Sarah is too old, but God. The sea is in front of them and Pharaoh's army is behind them, but God. The disciples are locked in a room in terror, but God. The cross stands on a hill outside Jerusalem, but God. Mary Magdalene appears in despair at the tomb, but God.

Again and again, Scripture insists that God is never limited by the stories we tell ourselves about what is possible.
