" Standing on the Promises "

Russell Carter was a professor at the Pennsylvania Military Academy, where his many roles ranged from herding sheep to teaching Natural Science, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, and Mathematics. During his time herding sheep, he developed a serious heart condition and began to believe he was nearing death. In that moment, he knelt and made a promise: whether he was healed or not, his life would be fully and forever consecrated to the service of the Lord.
From that point on, the written Word of God came alive to Carter. He began standing on God’s promises, choosing to believe in healing regardless of his physical condition or how he felt. Over the next several months, his strength gradually returned, and his heart was completely healed.
Following his recovery, Carter committed his life to serving God, making it his guiding principle to “stand on the promises.” This theme is reflected in his hymn Standing on the Promises, where each verse begins with that reminder. He anchored his faith in 2 Corinthians 1:20.
Carter went on to dedicate himself to ministry as a Methodist pastor while also writing and publishing hymnals, textbooks, and novels.

" Come, O Traveler Unknown "

Come, O Traveler Unknown (also known as Wrestling Jacob) first published in 1742 written by Charles Wesley is based on the biblical account of Jacob wrestling with an angel, from Genesis 32:24-32. It has been included in every Methodist hymnbook since 1780. In its original form, it had fourteen stanzas, but this Sunday we are only doing verse 1 and 4. The hymn is commonly described as one of Charles Wesley's greatest compositions, with the hymn writer Isaac Watts quoted as saying that "that single poem, Wrestling Jacob, was worth all the verses he himself had written".

"O Love that Wilt Not Let Me Go"

From the United Methodist Hymnal (No. 480) "O Love that Wilt Not Let Me Go." Many hymn writers say they struggle when composing a hymn text, revising and tweaking it until the meter and choice of images are exactly right. Others conceive the hymn as a whole and transmit it to paper as quickly as they can write it down. In the case of “O Love that wilt not let me go,” a mystical experience inspired the creative process. This Sunday June 14th this is our closing hymn.

“God, Whose Love Is Reigning O’er Us”

From the United Methodist Hymnal (No. 100) “God, Whose Love Is Reigning O’er Us” was written at the request of Susan Jane Grove and Douglas Alan DeJarnett and used as a processional hymn for their wedding in November 1980. This Sunday June 14th it is our opening hymn.
