Cornerstone Fellowship

Cornerstone Fellowship A Christ-worshiping community Cornerstone is a church/fellowship that meets for worship on Sunday mornings 10:30-12:00 at 1101 E. Colorado Ave. in Urbana.

We do our best to imitate Christ in this world. We aren't here to put on a show or create another denomination. Our services are simple and we try to be authentic and vulnerable in our teaching and worship. Seth Kerlin is the pastor of Cornerstone. He has been in ministry for about 20 years and has an MDiv from Regent College in Vancouver, BC. He and his wife Laura Kerlin are townies from way back and love doing ministry in C-U.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Not unlike how the hundred and twenty
Were presenting themselves to You
On the first day of establishing your church,
Those whom You had called out of
Darkness into your Kingdom light,
By tongues of fire resting on their heads.

Holy Spirit, we want to want fresh fire
On this day of Pentecost, but we confess
We may not want the kind of reshaping
That You might bring, if You came
In the kind of power You brought at
That first outpouring.

And yet, we know You are at work among us.
We know You strengthen us every day
To accomplish the duties of the day.
We know you provide food and shelter.
We know we have experienced your power.

We confess any unbelief.
We confess any indifference.

We open our hearts to You.
We accept what You want to give.
We receive your love and your power.
We need You every hour.

More, Lord, more.
Come, Holy Spirit.

We will never give up asking for more.
Because there’s always more to receive,
Until Your will is done on earth as in heaven
And your kingdom has come.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We come to contemplate your mysteries.
We don’t gather to meditate on an impersonal universe.
We come to meditate on your word,
Your beauty, and your goodness.

You are not primarily a philosophy, or a force;
You are a person.
A three-personed being, a trinity.
One in essence, three in expression,
Though words cannot express
The essence of trinity.

When we consider the foundation
Of our hope, our questions abound:

Father, what is the plan?
Jesus, what exactly were You doing
On the cross?
Spirit, how is it that we humans can
Be filled with You?

You are demonstrating some of your character
By setting us into these mysteries.
You are not a glorified human;
You are the One who created humans, along with
The air, the water, and the food, without which we die.

And we remember this morning that we also live
By every word that proceeds from your mouth.

We will never give up studying Your scripture.
There’s always more revelation to receive.
And the best will be here at the right time,
When we will know as we have been known.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Father, we have mixed emotions about
Mother’s Day. Not all of us, but many.

We had good mothers, we had difficult mothers;
We are good mothers, we are difficult mothers.
We wanted to mother and weren’t given the opportunity;
We weren’t sure about mothering and yet rose to the call.

You made mothers—and fathers.
You set up the whole system where a cell
From each one makes a new person
Because You wanted us to fill the earth
With humans who, together, could be your family.

But when we screwed up the whole plan
You rescued us
Because we are precious to You,
Each one of us.

We are so important to You that You care
About our every thought and feeling and behavior.
Like a good parent,
You are interested in the details of our lives.
You gave us the law so we know the good.
You call us to holiness so we can
Walk and talk with You.

You call us your children but we don’t want to
Take that for granted. It’s a marvelous privilege.

We will never give up letting You parent us.
There’s always more depth to the family relationship.
And we long for the best family reunion ever,
When You return to gather us

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
As we have given ourselves to You,
You have whole heartedly received us.
Like the son returning from the pig yard,
As we trudge up the lane to humble ourselves,
You run to meet us.

You know we carry many regrets
But You do not condemn us.
You do not shame us.
You forgive us.

When there was no way back from Eden’s fall,
You made the way for us to join your family.
You know we are still children, still learning.

You know the lies and deceptions of
This world’s ruler.
The lie that You are not good.
The lie that You are an abusive parent.
The lie that You neglect and abandon us,
Especially when pain provokes fear and unbelief.

You accept us in the Beloved.
You know we are still learning to
Lean on a good Father’s shoulder,
To relax into a Forever Father’s embrace.

Refresh our imagination today.
We want to think of You as You are.

We will never give up learning to rest in You.
There’s always a place of deeper peace.
And we await the best greeting ever,
When You run to meet us at heaven’s gate.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
In your last instructions to your disciples, You said,
“I will not leave you orphaned.”

Some of us are, and many of us feel, orphaned.
Indeed, if we enjoyed a good childhood,
Once we leave the nurture of those
Early years, who ever feels at home again?

Some of us, of course, have always felt
More at home with a chosen family, but
You’ve made men and women to
Form families with children so humans
Have a chance at growing up knowing
Themselves as a precious part of something
Bigger than their own individual selves.

When we are adopted into Your family and
We walk in obedience and trust,
You send your Spirit to draw us
Deeper and deeper into your household,
Where we find nurture and belonging in You.

However we feel this morning,
You honor our commitment to You.
We belong to You because You have chosen us
And we have chosen You.

We draw our comfort and identity from You.

We will never give up identifying with You.
You always offer more comfort and belonging.
We are not orphans.
And, already adopted, we await the
Eternal harmony of the best family imaginable.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Lord, we want to turn towards You this morning.
We want to soften our hearts.
Sometimes we turn away for a bit
But we’ve come today to face You,
To hear your words of comfort and conviction
In the midst of our ordinary lives.

Almost all of us live unknown lives.
We work or look for work.
We take care of ourselves and others.
The dailiness, the ordinariness of
The days, can lull us into a dullness of spirit.

We come to worship You today so we
Might believe the shimmering hope
You have placed in us.

You say our lives are hidden in You,
That there is a forever existence
To which this is only prelude.

We wonder, sometimes, if it’s really true
That great beauty and goodness awaits,
That we are truly children of the King
Destined to reign with You.

In the midst of the ordinary tasks
Of an ordinary life, You offer an
Astonishing vision of an
Exhilarating life in You.

We will never give up turning towards You.
There’s always more to trust.
And the best is yet to be, every day extraordinary.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
“Where, oh death, is your victory;
Where, oh death is your sting?”

We infused your creation with death
But, in your rising, You disappeared death
And heralded hope.

No one else gives
The quality of hope You offer.
We may hope for a job.
We may hope for a friend.
We may hope for a child.

But your hope beggars the imagination.
Your hope is the kind of hope
That stirs up deep joy,
Joy that sustains a whole life,
Whether we get the job, the friend, or the child.

Because the hope you have unleashed in
Your resurrection is the hope that life itself
Is more than we imagined.

That life, while it begins in birth,
Does not end in death.
That, no matter what it feels like or looks like,
Death is no longer the inescapable end.
At death’s door, You welcome us home.

We will never give up hoping in You.
There’s always a deeper joy.
And, because our hope is anchored
In Your resurrection, our best life lies
On the other side of death’s door.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
On this day we celebrate the moment when
History reversed.
When the curse began to lift.

From the minute Adam and Eve ate the apple
To the minute You burst forth from the tomb, Jesus,
We were lost in the wilderness.
We were wandering in desolation.
We were without You and without hope in the world.

But You have accomplished the great exchange:
You for us.
Because You define love.
Because You are rich in mercy.
Because that sacrifice was the only way.

Your resurrection, Jesus, gave us back
The possibility of walking together again.
You were made sin that we might be made
The righteousness that You’ve had with
The Father from eternity past.

Your resurrection unsealed the tomb
And sealed our acceptance.
Glory.
Hallelujah.
Thank You.

We will never give up thanking You.
There’s always more to celebrate.
And the best is still ahead, the joyous
Moment of reward for You and for us,
When we will sit down together
At the marriage feast.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Jesus, You knew what You were doing
When You asked for a donkey that day.
That day You rode that donkey into
Jerusalem, You knew You were
Acting out Zechariah’s prophecy about how
Israel’s King would arrive.

And You wept that your people
Did not recognize the times.
They did not see the prophecy enacted.
They did not grasp the significance.
There was rejoicing, but also, rejection.

We are here today because we want to
Rejoice without rejecting, though
We do confess points of
Rejection that pollute our rejoicing.

We maintain ownership
Of certain parts of ourselves.
We retain some right to self-determination.

But we rest in your sacrifice.
You accept our whole selves
With our bits of rebellion,
Our hearts not as surrendered
As we want them to be.

And we rejoice that our desire to honor You counts.

We will always count on your righteousness.
There’s always more purity to pursue.
And the best will be at your return, when
We will be like You, Jesus, having seen You as You are.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Some of us are winding down a life
And wondering how much is left as
We remember our early years,
Our young adulthood, our middle age,
All the pleasures, griefs, and disappointments.

We’re counting on You to
Carry us through old age
Like You’ve carried us through the rest.

Others of us are younger, maybe much younger.
We wonder what’s coming.
We’re still imagining our lives.
We have an idea of what we want
And maybe of what You might want
But we have more dreams that memories

We all need You to renew our thinking
To make a life worth living during these
Tumultuous times as
Wars and rumors of war abound.

Because You are the rock of reality.
You are the story teller;
We are the characters You cherish.
You are our Father, the parent we need,
The authority, the creator, the shaper
Of all our memories and dreams.

Wrap your arms around us now, Lord Jesus.

We will never give up expecting to be carried.
You made us to live in union with You.
And we long for our eternal home.
Amen.
