A Christ-worshiping community Cornerstone is a church/fellowship that meets for worship on Sunday mornings 10:30-12:00 at 1101 E. Colorado Ave. in Urbana.

We do our best to imitate Christ in this world. We aren't here to put on a show or create another denomination. Our services are simple and we try to be authentic and vulnerable in our teaching and worship. Seth Kerlin is the pastor of Cornerstone. He has been in ministry for about 20 years and has an MDiv from Regent College in Vancouver, BC. He and his wife Laura Kerlin are townies from way back and love doing ministry in C-U.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Lord, we come today to confess once more
That we are sinners,
Bound into sin like an alcoholic
Is bound to drink.

And like alcoholics in recovery, we need each other.
We need the fellowship of others
Who are seeking to get free of self-destructiveness,
Who are relying on each other’s testimonies
That freedom is possible.

You are the only power high enough,
Powerful enough, with enough forgiveness, to
Set us free from our rebellion and pettiness
And complaining and unholy desires.

Most of us have found some deliverance
From the sin that permeates our being
Because we have meditated on your words
And welcomed your Spirit’s unbinding.

But we always want more freedom and
We understand that the more we let You
Have your way, the more joy we receive.

And we long for a deep and abiding joy.

We will never give up letting You purify us.
Adam’s sin, other’s sin, and our own sin create
The suffering that You use to
Purify our hearts.
In the midst of distress,
There’s always more to trust to You.
And, in the end, complete freedom awaits.
Amen.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We would have despaired
Unless we had believed
We would see your goodness
In the land of the living.

We gather this morning because
You have honored that faith.
Much still troubles us, but
We have tasted enough of your goodness
That we want to trust You with all our confusion.

We don’t know why we were raised
In a dangerous household.
We don’t know why cancer is
Part of our story.
We don’t know why that
Accident happened that
Changed the trajectory of our life.

We do know that You know.
You saw all the danger and
You carried us through it.
You brought moments of comfort
In the midst of the cancer.
You are with us as we walk
A path we never imagined.

Give us grace, today, to trust You with everything.

We will never give up turning towards You.
We want to bring our whole hearts to You,
That You might be at work growing our trust
In the midst of our pain and confusion.
And we look forward to the day your goodness
Washes over us in eternal joy.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
After your friend Lazarus died, Jesus, before
You called him out of his tomb,
You said to his sister Martha,
That everyone who believes in You will never die.

We come today to be reminded of your promises.
We hope to cling to those words on our deathbeds.
We won’t know how rooted
Your words are in the soil of our hearts
Until the fruit of your words
Is the sustenance of our souls.

Until we are tested, we don’t know
If we idolize this life.
We don’t know if money, s*x, and power
Are our preeminent occupations
Until we no longer have access.

We want faith, hope, and love to be the
Fruit of our hearts.
We want to broadcast your word
Into our hearts so, when we are tested,
We can harvest the crops of righteousness.

We want our hearts to be full of the fruit
We need when times of testing come.

Jesus, plant your seeds today.
Cultivate your crops.
Grow your fruit in our lives.

We will never give up clinging to You and one day
We will close our eyes here and open our eyes there
To see You, which will be the best sight ever.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We want to know more of your kindness
And we need your course corrections.
Left to ourselves, we tend to wander off track.
We go after the comfort the world offers.

Worldly comfort can hook us.
The sugar, the ni****ne, the alcohol,
The physical pleasures, all offer a way
To feel better for a moment.

You know all of what drives us.
You know the shame and the pride.
You know the wounds we carry.
You know what’s happened to us.
You know how we’ve tried to forget.
You know all the ways we’ve been bent
By our own sin and other’s sin against us.

And so often we are not honest with ourselves.
Much less do we confess to anyone else
Our sinful ways of coping and finding comfort.

We have many reasons for our behavior,
But no excuses.

So, today, please give us grace to take the next step.
We want to keep growing in holiness.
We need You to hold us in your compassion
So we can receive your kind rebuke.

We will never give up returning to You.
We always need more revelation.
And freedom from every bo***ge will be
Our best life now and forever.
Amen.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
World leaders have met in New York this week and
Made decisions that will affect millions of lives,
While wars rage, trade continues, and ships sail.

You observe and intervene in mysterious ways.
You know every life, You know every city,
You know every country and continent.

You will superintend all your plans to completion
In all the world and in our individual lives.
For some of us, it’s been a life-changing week.
For others, a simple, uneventful few days.

You keep track of every jot and tittle.
We know only a fraction of what You think about,
The scope of your activity, what You enact,
Day by day, month by month, year by year.

We thank You again, Jesus, for
The incarnation that allowed first century
Disciples to see the face of God and to
Leave a written record for us.

We gather again today to lift our eyes
To the biggest possible picture, even
As we walk step by step with You.

We will always maintain that dual focus
On your big vision and our everyday life.
We need to attend to both.
And we await that beautiful day,
When our lives are complete in You
And all is accomplished, when
We will know as we have been known.
Amen.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
As always, we are weak and needy, though
We prefer to feel large and in charge.

We ignore our vulnerability until we can’t.
We don’t notice our dependence
On truck farms, on semis and railroads,
On generating plants, on medical labs.

Until we get a scary diagnosis, we may not
Think about weakness and powerlessness.

You have made us peculiar creatures.
Transient, flawed, and yet precious to You.
You don’t turn away from our weakness.
You embrace us as we turn to You.
As we walk the road towards You, You run to us,
Like the Father of the wayward son.

You supply the elements of our existence.
You made fruits and vegetables.
You made iron and oil.
You made electricity.

Today, we contemplate our fragility.
Beyond the immediate suppliers
We depend on, we remember You,
Our source and sustainer.

We will never give up thanking You.
There’s always more to appreciate.
And the best is yet to be, when
We will inhabit new bodies in a new creation,
Strong with your strength,
Full of your Spirit, living a life that lasts forever.
Amen.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We remember where we were this weekend
Twenty five years ago.
We remember fear, uncertainty, disorientation.
No one knew what was next.

We know the stories;
The images still come to mind.
Of course, some of us were not yet born.
It’s history to us, like D Day is to those of us older.

Such an event raises so many questions, Father.
You know our confusion about where You are
When such terror comes for us.
We may find it hard to believe You’re with us.
We may wonder if You’ve looked away.

Jesus, we still bring our questions to You today.
Not because your answers explain everything,
But because You are the only one
Who has the words of eternal life.

Then and now You continue to gather us together,
Forming your family in the midst of this present evil age.
The world is always in the grip of the evil one—
From your time, to that terrible time, to now.

Weary with memories, we come to You,
Asking for comfort and perspective.

We will never give up running to You.
There’s always more comfort to receive.
And we believe your promise to
Make all things new in a world reborn,
A kingdom of unsurpassable joy and peace.
Amen.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
If we have begun a life with You,
We began with repentance.
We turned away from disinterest and rebellion.
We turned towards You.

We began to investigate who You are.
We began to respond to your questions.
We began to see who we are
And who You are.

We are contingent creatures.
You are source and sustainer.
You made us. We did not make You.
You are first cause; creator; self-existent.

We began to understand we do not belong
To ourselves. We belong to You.
You reign over the cosmos and
Over each one of us.

We come today to renew our repentance.
We affirm again that You are in charge.
We have abandoned our natural impulse
Of domination and pursuing our own way.
We accept your supernatural way because
You are leading us into the life that lasts forever.

Thank You for drawing us into your arms.

We will never give up pursuing You.
There’s always a deeper intimacy available.
You are ruler, but You are also the good Father.
Your face is always turned toward us which is
The best revelation we’ve ever been given.

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We do not want to take for granted
That You call us together.

Whether we are visiting this morning’s service
Or have attended for years;
Whether we’re wondering if there’s something
To this Jesus thing,
Or we are pretty sure You are who You say You are,
You prompted each one of us.

You call us to trust, to faith, to renounce evil.
And as we pursue You,
You will grow us in holiness.
That may be an old fashioned word to us,
But it’s always of the moment to You.

You are bringing us into new depths of
Forgiveness, self-discipline, and wholeness.
You’ve helped us release much
Resentment, immorality, and fear
And we want more freedom.

We don’t want to take for granted that You
Are at work in us to make us fit for your kingdom.
Thank You for what You are doing
In us, for us, and through us.

We will always love You because You
Have loved us from the beginning.

We will never give up responding to your call.
Every day You give new opportunities.
And we each await our final call, to the
Freedom and joy of life with You, forever.
Amen.
