Cornerstone Fellowship

Cornerstone Fellowship A Christ-worshiping community Cornerstone is a church/fellowship that meets for worship on Sunday mornings 10:30-12:00 at 1101 E. Colorado Ave. in Urbana.

We do our best to imitate Christ in this world. We aren't here to put on a show or create another denomination. Our services are simple and we try to be authentic and vulnerable in our teaching and worship. Seth Kerlin is the pastor of Cornerstone. He has been in ministry for about 20 years and has an MDiv from Regent College in Vancouver, BC. He and his wife Laura Kerlin are townies from way back and love doing ministry in C-U.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We do not want to take for granted
That You call us together.

Whether we are visiting this morning’s service
Or have attended for years;
Whether we’re wondering if there’s something
To this Jesus thing,
Or we are pretty sure You are who You say You are,
You prompted each one of us.

You call us to trust, to faith, to renounce evil.
And as we pursue You,
You will grow us in holiness.
That may be an old fashioned word to us,
But it’s always of the moment to You.

You are bringing us into new depths of
Forgiveness, self-discipline, and wholeness.
You’ve helped us release much
Resentment, immorality, and fear
And we want more freedom.

We don’t want to take for granted that You
Are at work in us to make us fit for your kingdom.
Thank You for what You are doing
In us, for us, and through us.

We will always love You because You
Have loved us from the beginning.

We will never give up responding to your call.
Every day You give new opportunities.
And we each await our final call, to the
Freedom and joy of life with You, forever.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Jesus, we gather in your presence today, grateful
That You are the Prince of Peace.

We live in a milieu of war and rumors of war.
In our connected world, we can’t escape
The news of conflicts everywhere.
We know the numbers of bombs and
How drones have changed the reckoning of war.

We can only imagine the distress of those who
Can’t escape the drones and the bombs.

We can debate the morality
Of war in general or in particular, but
Those who suffer on the ground
Care only about survival.
And we grieve with them, as You do.

We long for violence itself to be put to death,
For a life of truth spoken in love.

We pray for You to bring about your peace,
Though we understand that lasting peace
Is not possible in a world fallen from grace.
If not now, in our time, then
We anticipate that day when You will
Establish your rule and reign of peace.

And we will never give up looking for
That day when You will ring down the curtain.
There’s always more to imagine.
In the midst of conflict, war, and despair,
You have given us the hope in which we stand,
That You, the architect of peace, are on your way.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Because You have turned your face to us,
We come again to offer ourselves,
To turn our faces towards You.

You welcome each one of us.
We so long to be seen as we are,
Accepted as we are,
Honored for our efforts.

And, like no one else ever has,
You see us.
You see the depth of pain we carry.
You see the scope of our worries.
You see all our efforts to gain victory
Over our shortcomings and failures.

You know the tears we’ve shed
As hope has given way to frustration.

You know all the happy times, too.
The moments of transcendence,
The days of peace and joy,
The years of serenity.

You lived this life, Jesus, so
You know what a combination it is.
And You are leading us out of this mishmash
Into an unbroken life that will last forever.

We will never give up looking for Your face.
There’s always more to see in your eyes.
And the best, when we will see
As we have been seen,
Is just around the corner.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We want the words of our mouths
And the meditations of our hearts
To be acceptable to You.

And yet, we do not always think and
Speak words that honor You.

You know our disparaging thoughts
About those You have made in your image.
You know we wish our neighbors
Who are so loud and mean
Would get put out on the street.
You know that, in our deepest heart,
We want blood for the way
Our parents harmed us.

A key part of honoring You
With our words is to confess our sins.
But our shame constrains us.
We’re sure something is wrong with us
That can’t be fixed and to tell someone
Our spiteful thoughts would only expose us.

And yet, You are our strength and our redeemer.
You know the violence of our thoughts.
And, when we confess our sins,
You are faithful to forgive and to cleanse.

Meet us now, Lord, as we open our hearts.

We will never give up asking for grace to honor You.
There’s always more cleansing needed.
And we await that eternal day when
You will delight in our every word.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We gather this morning to affirm that
This is your world, your galaxies, your universe.
We inhabit a world not of our own making,
But of yours.

You spoke and there was light, the energy
That began everything we see and know.
You made the firmament.
You made the seas.
You made the dry land.
You made the animals.
You made the trees bearing fruit.
You made a finely tuned universe before
You made humans to work the land and eat the fruit.

This is not our world. This is your world.

We can lose sight of that because You’ve given us
Authority and ability to construct and modify and invent.
We can forget that You made everything we see and
All we can hold in our hands.

Our clothing comes from the cotton plant.
Our seating begins as trees and iron.
We eat your cows and beans and lettuce.
We exist because of your imagination.

We assemble to remind ourselves that
We are not in charge.
You are, and You have plans and purposes
Beyond our ability to imagine.

But we will never give up trusting your plans
Because You have revealed your goodness to us
And we await the day when You make all things new.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
We may look strong and together
This morning, but we are weak and needy.
More vulnerable than we want to admit.

And fragile. We don’t think about it much,
But we’re aware that life can shift in an instant—
In a phone call,
In a gust of wind,
In a court summons.

You have made us to live in union with You.
The only safe place is in your hand.

We acknowledge that You are the strength
Of our hearts and our portion forever.
We need You more than we know.

We recommit ourselves to union with You.
To believing You can speak clearly,
In a way we can understand,
To direct our thoughts and our steps.
We lay ourselves open before You.
We want You to fill us fresh with your Spirit,
That we might be empowered
To rest and to work to honor You.

To You, and You alone,
We give honor and praise and glory.
Only You are worthy of worship.

We will never give up acknowledging You.
Our strength is in You.
We are safe in your hands and the
Eternal adventure awaits.
Amen.

Father God
Lord Jesus
Holy Spirit

We present ourselves before You again this Sunday.
Kris Kristofferson wrote and Janis Joplin sang,
About Bobby McGee, that he was looking
For a home and she hoped he’d find it.

Everyone looks for a home, a place to belong.
The place where, when we show up
At the door, they will take us in.

Some of us were born into such wonderful homes
That we have gone back often to our families of origin.
Some of us were turned out early, into
The loneliness of the world, to make our own way.
For most of us, home is somewhere in between
Those extremes—mixed, like life is.

But we all have an idealized image of home.
We know what it’s supposed to be.

And we are here because You have become home.
You, Father, have welcomed us.
You watched for us, waiting at the window.
You’ve thrown a party to celebrate.

Having accepted your welcome, we don’t know
When we’ll get the call to the eternal gathering.
It might come unexpectedly.
But some of us know we’re near the end.
The summons is in the mail.
We’re almost home—just a few more miles.

We will never give up longing for home.
There’s always more to anticipate.
And we can only imagine the party when You receive us
Into the beautiful mansions You have prepared.
Amen.
