Who do you welcome — and who welcomes you?

Maybe you've been somewhere that said "everyone is welcome" — and it didn't quite feel that way.

We get it. A lot of us have been there too.

This Sunday, Rev. Geoff Weinman brings a message called "Welcome," and he's drawing from two passages that, together, say something genuinely surprising. In Romans 6, Paul talks about what it means to live differently — not under the weight of what holds us back, but in the freedom of grace. And in Matthew 10, Jesus tells his disciples that whoever welcomes them welcomes him. Not someday. Not symbolically. Right now, in the ordinary act of opening a door for someone.

At Central Christian Church, "welcome" isn't a program or a campaign. It's a conviction that goes back more than a century — that this table, this community, and this faith are big enough for real people with real questions. We're a Disciples of Christ congregation, and from the beginning, that's meant something: an open table, an open mind, and a genuine effort to mean it when we say the door is open.

On Sunday, June 21st, the tornado sirens went off in the middle of our worship service. The congregation, out of safety and concern, moved to the basement where we finished our worship service. We sat among friends and family, among boxes and old decorations. But we fellowshipped together, we worshipped together, we sang hymns and heard the choir, and we give thanks to God for all we have been given. It wasn't the service that was planned, but it just might have been one that we all needed.

What if the faith you were raised with still had something to say? 🧐

Not the version that let you down, or the one that felt more like a set of rules than a relationship — but something older and truer than that. Something that actually holds up when life gets hard.

This Sunday, Rev. Geoff Weinman preaches "For Truly..." from Matthew 5:13-20 — words straight from the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside and hands them something they didn't expect: not a rulebook, but an identity.

“You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.” It's the kind of passage that sounds familiar until you really sit with it. Then it gets interesting.

Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has been gathering in Springfield for generations. 🕊️ Jesus went to the wrong table. On purpose. This Sunday, we explore why.

Matthew 9 finds Jesus doing what he always does — going where the need is greatest, touching what everyone else called untouchable, eating with people the religious establishment had written off. It's not a comfortable passage. It's a CLARIFYING one.

This Sunday, we warmly welcome back Rev. Geoff Weinman as he returns to the pulpit after a much-deserved rest. His message, "Desire Mercy," draws from Jesus' own words: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." Two thousand years later, that sentence still lands.

We'll also have one of those Sundays that's hard to describe to someone who wasn't there. Chancel Choir, bell choir, brass, organ, piano, and percussion — all together in glorious worship! Come early, find a seat, and let the music settle you before the word does.

Three in one. One in all. And a seat saved just for you this Trinity Sunday. ✝️

Matthew 28 ends with a promise that hasn't expired: "I am with you always." That's not a sentiment. That's a commission. Jesus speaks those words to a group of people who had just been through the hardest season of their lives — and he sends them out anyway. Not when they had it all figured out. Not when the doubt was gone. Right then, in the middle of it.

Sound familiar?

This Sunday we're sitting with those words together, alongside Paul's closing blessing in 2 Corinthians — a benediction so simple it almost sneaks past you: be restored, be encouraged, live in peace. Grace, love, and fellowship, all at once. Three persons, one God, one people trying to find their way back to whole.

That's Trinity Sunday. That's the message. And that's where Rev. Alyssa Spradlin is taking us.

She's back in our pulpit this week to bring the message "Be Restored," and if you were here the last time she preached, you already know — clear your morning. This is worth your time.

Central Christian has been part of the fabric of Springfield for generations. People have brought their grief here, their questions here, their kids and their doubts and their hard-won faith here. Our sanctuary has held all of it. Our music — and we mean this — will move you. And our people? They will genuinely welcome you. Not in a performative, hand-you-a-bulletin kind of way. In a pull-up-a-chair-and-mean-it kind of way.

That's who we are. That's who we've always been.
