Join us for All Saints’ Day—a special Sunday of remembrance.

The Beatitudes in Matthew 5 aren’t a list of rules. They’re Jesus looking out at an ordinary crowd, people who were grieving, worn down, hungry for things to be made right, and calling them blessed. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” He ends with a promise: rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven.

1 John 3 picks up the same thread. “See what love God has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.” Not someday. Right now. And the letter admits plainly that what we will be hasn’t been revealed yet. We don’t have every answer about what comes next. What we do have is a promise that it’s more than we can imagine, held by a God who loves us.

That’s the heart of Rev. Geoff Weinman’s message, “Great in Heaven.” On Sunday we’ll speak the names of the saints from our church family who have died this past year and give thanks for a love that death doesn’t get the last word on.

The music for this service will be something special, with the great hymns of the saints and music that lifts the heart and comforts the soul. Then we’ll gather at the Lord’s Table, where everyone is welcome.

Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has been a home in Midtown Springfield for generations, and our doors are open to everyone. Whoever you are, whoever you’re missing, there’s a place for you here.

Someone once handed you God’s love. Who’s next in line?

Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to a young church in Thessalonica. He hadn’t arrived there in great shape. He and his companions had just been beaten and thrown in jail in Philippi, and the reception in Thessalonica wasn’t much friendlier. They could have kept their heads down. Instead, they spoke up.

And Paul is refreshingly honest about how they did it. No flattery. No sales pitch. No angling for praise or a paycheck. He says they were gentle among the people there, like a mother tenderly caring for her own children. And because they had come to love those folks so deeply, they didn’t just hand over a message. They gave of themselves. (1 Thessalonians 2:1-8)
That’s how the good news has always traveled. Not through polished speeches, but through ordinary people who cared enough to show up.

This Sunday, the Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost, Rev. Geoff Weinman brings us “Entrusted with the Message.” Think about who handed God’s love to you. Maybe a grandmother, a Sunday School teacher, a neighbor who sat with you through a hard season. Now it’s in our hands. We hear it, we live it, and we pass it along to a world that needs to know God loves every single person in it.

For generations, Central Christian Church has been sharing that message from the heart of Midtown Springfield. Whoever you are, wherever you’ve been, whatever you’re carrying, there’s a seat for you here, and a place for you at the Table.

Faith isn’t something you just believe. It’s something you do.

That’s the heart of this Sunday’s message, “Faith and Labor,” from Rev. Geoff Weinman. Our scripture, 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, is likely the oldest writing in the entire New Testament.

Paul wrote it to a brand-new congregation in Thessalonica, a busy port city where he’d been run out of town after only a few weeks. He had every reason to worry they wouldn’t make it. Instead, he opens with gratitude. He tells them he gives thanks for them constantly, remembering their “work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope.”

That word “labor” matters. In Paul’s language it means the kind of work that wears you out. Sore muscles. Long days. The effort you give when no one’s watching and you’re tired anyway. These folks weren’t keeping their faith tucked away for Sunday. They were living it out under pressure, and they did it with joy.

And people noticed. Paul says word of their faith spread all through the region, so far that he didn’t need to tell anyone about it. Their lives did the talking.

Most of us know something about that kind of labor. Raising kids, caring for aging parents, showing up for a job, a neighbor, a community that needs us. Paul reminds us that this every day, wearying, faithful work is holy, and it’s how the good news gets told.

Rejoice in the Lord always — and again I say, rejoice! 🙌

This Sunday, Rev. Geoff Weinman continues in Paul's letter to the Philippians with a sermon titled "If There Is Any," drawn from Philippians 4:4–9. Paul reminds us that everything we do should be done to God and for God. Through the good times and the hard ones, we are called to give thanks, because God is with us always and will never leave us. And because God is faithful to us, we are called to live faithfully in return, putting into practice all that we have been shown and taught by God, by Jesus, by Paul, and by all the faithful who have gone before us.

Whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise, come think on these things with us this Sunday. All are welcome!
