“When those who tended the pigs saw what happened, they ran away and told the story in the city and in the countryside. People came to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone. He was sitting at Jesus’ feet, fully dressed and completely sane. They were filled with awe. Those people who had actually seen what had happened told them how the demon-possessed man had been delivered.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭34‬-‭36‬ ‭CEB‬‬

The change in the man is instantaneous, it seems to happen very quickly. Are there situations we wish Jesus would do this sort of quick work on? Do you know people who could use this kind of immediate change?

Can you think of a situation where you or someone you know experienced a sudden change?

“Jesus and his disciples sailed to the Gerasenes’ land, which is across the lake from Galilee. As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, a certain man met him. The man was from the city and was possessed by demons. For a long time, he had lived among the tombs, naked and homeless. When he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down before him. Then he shouted, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” He said this because Jesus had already commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had taken possession of him, so he would be bound with leg irons and chains and placed under guard. But he would break his restraints, and the demon would force him into the wilderness.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭26‬-‭29‬ ‭CEB‬‬

This man at one point in time was a child and had a family, and most likely had connections and friendships. Something had changed for him, though we don't know what that was. The only thing we know is that he did not begin in the place Jesus finds him. He would have been easy to give up on - easy to cast aside. Do we ever run across people that are easy to give up on?

““A certain lender had two debtors. One owed enough money to pay five hundred people for a day’s work.The other owed enough money for fifty. When they couldn’t pay, the lender forgave the debts of them both. Which of them will love him more?” Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the largest debt canceled.” Jesus said, “You have judged correctly.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭41‬-‭43‬ ‭CEB‬‬

Perhaps Luke wants to show us our definitions and boxes of love, grace, and faith are too small. Grace is big, love is big - it surprises and redefines our expectations. If you put yourself in the shoes of the woman or Simon, which person are you? Are you the one who owes the greater debt, or is your debt smaller? How does this shape your gratitude for grace?

“Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” The other table guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this person that even forgives sins?” Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭48‬-‭50‬ ‭CEB‬‬

At the very end of the passage Jesus tells the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." How do you think Jesus is defining faith? Also, what did her faith cost her?

“One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. After he entered the Pharisee’s home, he took his place at the table. Meanwhile, a woman from the city, a sinner, discovered that Jesus was dining in the Pharisee’s house. She brought perfumed oil in a vase made of alabaster. Standing behind him at his feet and crying, she began to wet his feet with her tears. She wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and poured the oil on them. When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw what was happening, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. He would know that she is a sinner.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭36‬-‭39‬ ‭CEB‬‬

Luke tells us that the woman was a "sinner", we don't know what her sin was and even Peter called himself a sinner (Luke 5:8) - when we read sin associated with women are there conclusions we jump to? Is it possible, when it comes to the sins of women in scripture, we see what we want to see? If so, why is that?

“Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume. “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭44‬-‭47‬ ‭NLT‬‬

In the passage, Jesus says the woman has shown him "much love". Why do you think Jesus uses the love to describe what she has done?
