“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God loves abundantly and gives grace abundantly. God always makes the first move of love toward us, not waiting to see if we deserve it, or how we are going handle it. God is a giver, and we have been given the gift of grace - grace is a gift not, a transaction.

Are there times when you think more of yourself than you ought? Do you have moments where you think, “How come other people can’t get their stuff together- like me?”

Are you open-handed with grace, or do you have times when you treat it like a transaction?

Take a deep breath today, and as you encounter others pray, “Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.”

And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.”

If you have ever tried to put something back together that had been broken, it can be difficult. Often it takes time and patience. If you’ve ever rebuilt something or restored something, usually it’s not quick.

People are no different; and depending on history, family dynamics, relationships, and wounds - it can be far more complicated than putting an object back together.

Do you tend to be patient with others, or are you in a hurry?

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We can be results-driven; we often expect things to happen very quickly. We’re used to things moving much like an assembly line or a drive-thru. Doing good and helping others is not quick work - it requires patience and prayer.

Paul encourages the Galatians to not give up and he promises blessings if they don’t. What kind of blessings do you think he’s talking about?

““Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭36‬-‭37‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Jesus doesn’t leave us any escape hatches or loopholes. He doesn’t give us space for categories, the call is “go and do.” Go and be responsible for people - care for them, spend your money to care for them, make sure they are safe, bandage their wounds.

What would it look like for you to approach everyone as neighbor, friend, or human?

“Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and w**e and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭30‬-‭34‬ ‭NLT‬‬

To answer “who is my neighbor?” Jesus tells a story of care, compassion, and generosity. The Samaritan is not content to walk on by, he takes action on behalf of someone who is in need.

A neighbor is anyone in our path, anyone in need. In the story, Jesus invites the religious expert to love and live beyond loopholes and easy answers. He invites him and us to live with a generous spirit.

Who’s your neighbor? Who’s in your path?
Do something.
Serve somebody.
Give generously.
