Join us Sunday as we kick off four weeks of a series we are calling "Learning to Fly!"

Think about your past week of prayer and reading. Is there a passage of Scripture that stood out to you? Reread it. Did you journal? Make any notes? Scribble in your Bible? Reread them.

Answer the following questions:

Question 1: What are the most important things I’ve learned/discovered/remembered this week?

Question 2: As you pray ask, "God, what one insight would you like me to share with my Sunday School class or small group?"

“Now when Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Human One is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” He said, “And what about you? Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭13‬-‭16‬ ‭CEB‬‬

When Jesus asks the big question, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter tells him (and the other disciples), “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Have you wondered who Jesus is, and have you sorted that out?

“I tell you that you are Peter. And I’ll build my church on this rock. The gates of the underworld won’t be able to stand against it.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭18‬ ‭CEB‬‬

Since we have a bias toward buildings and structures, do we lose sight of the people part of what Jesus wants to build?

“Then Jesus replied, “Happy are you, Simon son of Jonah, because no human has shown this to you. Rather my Father who is in heaven has shown you. I tell you that you are Peter. And I’ll build my church on this rock. The gates of the underworld won’t be able to stand against it.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭17‬-‭18‬ ‭CEB‬‬

When we hear or read “church” we immediately think about a building, but that’s not what Jesus was saying. Peter and the other disciples heard “gathering”, and gatherings are made up of people. They began with a small group; do you think they would have imagined what the gathering would look like today?

I’ll give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Anything you fasten on earth will be fastened in heaven. Anything you loosen on earth will be loosened in heaven.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭13‬-‭19‬ ‭CEB‬‬

As you reread the passage, what grabs your attention? What do you think the big idea or main point might be? Are there multiple big ideas?

Why do you think Jesus picks this moment to have this conversation?
