Creating a welcoming church for individuals with autism starts with intentional training.

Volunteers don't need to become autism specialists, but they do need practical tools and the confidence to respond with compassion. As Julie Pratt writes, training is about more than sharing information. It's about shaping mindsets and creating a shared language that helps every person feel seen, valued, and at home.

A few principles every church team should know:

• Autism is a spectrum, and every individual's experience is different.
• Every child communicates, even if they don't communicate verbally. Volunteers can learn to recognize body language, facial expressions, gestures, and other forms of communication.
• Physical touch isn't always comforting. In moments of distress, creating space, reducing stimuli, and offering a calm presence is often the best response.
• It's okay not to have all the answers. What matters most is a willingness to learn, listen, and grow.

A church culture of belonging isn't built by having perfect volunteers. It's built by volunteers who are prepared to meet people with patience, understanding, and love.
