You talked! We listened! Some of the requests that came up over and over at our many listening sessions held during the past 2 years, were requests for more interaction with our priests and more community gatherings to get to know each other.

We hear you! Join us for our new program "Father Knows Fun". Held on 4 Saturday nights over the next few months at both St. Joe's and St. T's. We will kick off on Saturday, September 19th at St. T's.

We are so grateful that in our Parish Family we share a faith that means walking with our neighbors through every step of their journey. We are proudly Jesuit! Thank you Jesuits West for highlighting this crucial program! In our Parish Family, our Jesuit priests, parishioners are also accompanying immigrants to court proceedings, offering a welcoming presence, and staffing the welcome table outside the courthouse with hospitality, prayer, and support.

Want to be part of this ministry of accompaniment? Join our Standing with Immigrants Ministry on Sunday, September 13 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Therese. All are welcome from across our parish family. Come learn how you can put faith into action and stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters.

The San Diego Union-Tribune recently reported on the FAITH program, a project by the Jesuits’ Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, The Roman Catholic Diocese of SAN DIEGO and the San Diego Organizing Project. The ministry is grounded in bearing witness, building trust, and providing pastoral care for individuals and families during their immigration court hearings and ICE check-ins.

Fr. Scott Santarosa, SJ (pictured, center), pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe, has been ministering to immigrants during their court hearings and check-in appointments at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building for the past year. Volunteers do not interfere with arrests; rather, their role is to bear witness and have a consistent presence.

“Our ways of accompanying people have had to change and adapt,” Fr. Santarosa said. For instance, earlier this summer, a federal judge ruled that the federal government could not make arrests at immigration courts. “But there’s still a consistent need for people to show up and offer a smile, a prayer, a sense of warmth and friendliness in an otherwise, I would say, cold and sterile federal building.”

For some volunteers, FAITH was a way to turn a feeling of despair into action. “I really felt that I needed to do something, even in a small way,” said Mary Holmes, who has volunteered with FAITH since its inception.

Last Saturday our Parish Family young adults hit the trail with Joseph Dickan SJ (Fr. Joe) for a hike and a beautiful Mass. It was a great opportunity to get outside, get connected, and feel the Spirit moving in the wind and the water. It felt like true improvisational energy; crowdsourcing band-aids, doubling back on the trails, and mutual invitation in our shared homily led by Father Joe. A great example of church happening outside the church!
