Humans are stubborn. And I think that the older we get or the more experience we have, the more “set in our ways” we become! I’ve been a surf coach for a couple of years now, and among the groms that I coach, some of them are so open-minded and soak in all of my advice, and some of them think they are just the best and don’t need any extra help.

Any guesses on which group improved the most throughout the season?? Yup, the ones who took the time to listen, apply corrections, and ask questions daily.

How do you approach your walk with the Lord? Do you keep an open mind to hear His voice, ask questions, and reflect on your walk? Or are you like some of my groms that think they don’t need extra help, take control, and do what they think is best? You might not even realize that you are being stubborn with the Lord until you are tested with a season of trials.

Isaiah 64:8
“But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.”

God wants to mold and shape our lives to reflect Him, but what happens when we think we know better and resist him “molding” us? I was pondering this years ago, and felt God telling me that when we remain soft and humble in Him, He is able to mold and shape us easily. The moment we become hard-hearted and stubborn, just like dried-out clay, He has to break us in order to mold us! We see this confirmed in Proverbs 16:18.

Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

How often do we think we know everything, like the groms on my surf team, and then quickly get humbled or go through a hard time in order to learn a lesson? Society calls that “learning the hard way,” and sometimes you may even laugh at yourself, realizing that you could’ve done things differently and listened to advice from the Lord or spiritual mentors.

I watched one of the groms on our team go from surfing on a foam board, barely able to catch a wave. But because he heeded our advice and committed to growing, he improved so much and by the end of the season, he was going down the line on a short board!

Take a moment today to pray about this subject. Are you truly allowing God to pe*****te into your heart and grow you in new ways? Or maybe, you will find that you could be a little more humble in your walk with the Lord by embracing a spirit of willingness to listen, a humbleness to grow, and to have a heart that God is able to mold without breaking the dried clay. You may be surprised at what God creates in you and how much more you are able to grow in your faith!

IMPACT OF THE SURFATHON

Thank you all for all your prayers and support for the 2nd-ever Surfathon! We were so blessed to participate in this global fundraiser to get more Bibles printed and into the hands of surfers who don’t know Jesus yet.

When we boil down everything we do as an organization, it really is the power of God’s word that does the changing.

Hebrews 4:12, which states the Word is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” Isaiah 55:11 says God’s Word “shall not return to me void.”

The work of Christian Surfers is simple: we want to see “every surfer and every surfing community have the opportunity to know and follow Jesus.” We do this in so many cool ways, but getting God’s word into the hands of people who haven’t read His living, breathing Word is crucial to fulfilling our mission.

We are truly grateful for this opportunity we had as an organization to catch as many waves as we could to raise funds to buy more Bibles. Read some of the testimonies below.

“Recently, I followed up with a young surfer I met on a flight a year ago. We spent three hours in the air talking about life and surfing and Jesus. I gave him a Surfer’s Bible while on the plane, and he asked many questions. We walked through that Bible for answers to those questions. Before we landed, he prayed for God’s forgiveness and welcomed Jesus as his Savior. He told me in our recent chat that he was attending a church regularly, in a small group and was leading a weekly Bible study with a few guys his age. Jesus changes everything and the Surfers Bible made a difference in the life of this young man.” – Kyle Sullivan, Northeast Regional Coordinator.

LIVING WATER | CALMING THE SEA
Emily Benedetto Maui Coordinator

Matthew 8:25-27
And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
You may have heard this story before: the disciples and Jesus are on a boat, and there is a great storm. Jesus is sleeping away, and the disciples wake Him up in a panic, asking Him to save them. Jesus so nonchalantly rebukes the storm, and the sea goes calm.
What have you gone through in your life that you can relate to this Bible verse?

Whether you have experienced crazy storms in the past or are going through one right now, know God is capable of calming the biggest storm.

LIVING WATER | MY IDENTITY
ANNA PETERSON

Ephesians. 2:4-6
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even while we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved — and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show you the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

Read the last bit of that verse a couple more times. “Raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” God has been teaching me lately how the things we believe about ourselves truly manifest in how we walk and interact with the world. It reminds me of how powerful your mindset can be when surfing.

I have had plenty of surf sessions where my mental game is just so bad, feeling discouraged and dwelling on mistakes. I will literally be paddling for waves while thinking, “I’m not gonna catch this.” And I can 99% guarantee you that every wave that I have paddled for while thinking that, I did not catch them! We all have our bad thoughts while surfing, which I’m sure we’ve seen get in the way of our performance. It’s the power of your mindset and what you believe. It’s crazy how much it translates into the way you act and live.

Similarly, I have found God teaching me again and again how important it is to be aware of what I am believing about myself and my identity. In my personal walk with Jesus, one of the biggest things He has rescued me from has been the uncertainty of my identity. A secure identity in Christ is something available to all of us, and it produces this grounded feeling of knowing who we are and where we are positioned. If I ever find myself feeling lost and unsure of myself, I am thankful to have an entire book filled with truths that God speaks over me. One of these is that I am seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

What does this even mean? It means that we can walk with confidence and authority, knowing we don’t have to walk around trying to prove ourselves to anyone. And that by grace, we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, as a gift not based on anything we earn or do. When we choose to truly believe this truth about who we are and where we are seated, it changes the way we interact with the world. It produces confidence and a security that frees us up to want to love others and be aware of their needs rather than being consumed trying to meet our own.

Receiving and believing this truth about our identity and position in Christ dramatically changes the way we walk as Christians. We can walk in humility, knowing we have not earned this position, yet with confidence, knowing the authority Jesus has freely given us.

There’s nothing like being in a 12-passenger van at capacity and traveling for 14 hours in a foreign country to create bonds between strangers. From the uncertainty of a new destination to the uncomfortable feelings of a lack of personal space, walls start to break down and relationships blossom. And, that’s just how Christian Surfers (CS) United States kicks off Foundations Training.

“We want them to know the DNA of CS,” says Cheyne Jobbins, southwest regional coordinator. “We want them to know what they are signing up for to be leaders. We want to grow their character and their leadership. And, at the end of the day, we just want them to have an experience with Jesus.”

“What I love about the East Coast Girls campout is being able to share some waves, talk about it, pray together and enjoy time and community,” says Kali Wiley. “I’m just so grateful for all God has blessed us with and that we can be out here in nature. When you take a step back, you really get to see the bigger picture and have a chance to thank God for the things in your life that are going great.”

Kali was one of 30 girls who joined the 2025 CS Coast Girls Campout. Read more highlights from the campout by clicking our bio.
