Wisdom from the Apostle Paul and Bobby McFerrin: During anxious times, how are we receptive to the peace of God which passes all understanding? While we are skeptical about easy fixes, Paul’s hard-earned wisdom as one who was writing from prison is credible and guides us to practices that open us to peace. Pastor Scott Trevithick preaches. We had a fun time at the Blessing of the Animals service at Good Shepherd with dogs of all sizes and breeds and cats, too, along with photos of pets left at home and of those beloved who have died. We give thanks for the joy and companionship pets bring to our lives. May God, who created all the animals of the earth, continue to protect and sustain us all. Thanks be to God.

Look for the Surprises: Today’s gospel reading is a parable—a story Jesus told about everyday circumstances and situations common to his audience. Parables also have twists and surprises to prompt us to think. This one has disturbing violence and is difficult to understand. We will look for the surprises to get clues about its meaning. Pastor Scott Trevithick preaches. Learn more about Good Shepherd by visiting our website: https://www.goodshepherdreno.org/home.

What Do You Think? In the gospel reading, Jesus poses a parable which prompts us to think about the ways in which we truly follow Jesus or do the will of God. On this Sunday on which we receive and welcome new members to Good Shepherd, this question is posed to us, too, and we are challenged to live out our faith authentically. If Grace is so Amazing, Why Do We Resent It? Like the early workers in the vineyard and Jonah who becomes angry with God, our notions of fairness differ from the grace God offers. Forgiveness Is: Through the lens of the story of Joseph and his brothers from Genesis, the sermon will illustrate how human, messy, complicated, and hard the process of seeking forgiveness can be as well as rejoice in the one who has the power to transform and who abounds in steadfast love. We are holding in prayer all those affected by the Bug and Stallion Fires burning in Washoe County, Nevada, and Lassen and Sierra Counties, California. We pray for all who are in harm’s way or have been displaced, and for the firefighters and first responders working to protect lives, homes, and communities.
