Last Sunday, Grace & Glory Lutheran participated in the first new feast day added into the Revised Common Lectionary since 1983, Feast of Creation in Christ. It isn't meant to be a churchy Earth Day. It is rooted in Orthodox practices dating from at least the 7th century. This new festival is offered as an opportunity to ponder and worship our Triune God as the Creator and reflect upon our sacred call to be God's stewards inherited from Adam and Eve. Pastor Lou's sermon can be found through this link:

We love our neighbors a ton, so we are trying to collect a ton of food for the local Monticello Area Community Action Agency & FCSS food pantry! Can you help? ❤️ Only 550 pounds and 6 days to go. This special summer food drive ends September 13, God’s Work - Our Hands Sunday. If we place in the top three of participating congregations, we will gain a special monetary grant from the Virginia Synod - ELCA’s World Hunger Team for our local pantry! 🍝 Members, friends and neighbors, we need pasta, sauce, cans of pasta related dishes, or Mac n’cheese. To ship your donation from Walmart, Amazon, or other vender of your choice to Grace and Glory at 683 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Palmyra, VA 22963. To drop off, do so during the week (call ahead to confirm someone is there to receive it please) or even better, come to our Pie Auction next Saturday. Bringing 5 items gets you 5% bid for a piece or a whole pie, and all proceeds go to the food pantry. We can also accept donations when we worship at 10 am next Sunday. Think about joining us for worship as we celebrate the end of our special food collection. Grazi! 🙏

In a dramatic shift from the religious beliefs of his time, Martin Luther viewed human labor as a primary way that God cares for the world. He called our everyday roles the "masks of God" because God works through ordinary people to feed, clothe, and protect society. Work is the practical tool Christians use to love and help the people around them. Nothing done in love whether for pay, volunteering, in the family or retirement, is too small to matter to God. Active life in society is just as noble as a life of quiet devotion in a monastery. Here is a prayer for Labor Day:

Gracious God who provides for our daily bread, we pray for the work people do to sustain themselves and their families and to benefit their communities and society. We pray that all people will receive fair wages and benefits and work in safe environments; that they will know respect, gratitude, joy and fulfillment through their labor; and that they will be renewed through times of sabbath. We remember also those who seek employment or who cannot work. Amen. - Adapted from ELCA Prayer Ventures

Join us at 10 am online or in person for the Feast of Creation in Christ. This is an historic moment in the life of the Church. Rooted in a worship traditions of at least the 7th Century, this new festival worship was added to the Revised Common Lectionary only this year. Through it, we worship God and give thanks as created beings tasked to be stewards of the Earth. This is the first time in over 500 years such an agreement between Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, Reformed, other Protestant, and free church traditions has been adopted. The feast contains four interrelated themes:
(1) Creation as God’s creative act as shared in Genesis,
(2) Creation as Christological mystery, as scripture teaches that all things were created in Christ, and he will restore all things,
(3) Creation as Trinitarian mystery as creation flows from the communal love and activity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and
(4) Creation as sacramental and covenantal because the physical world acts as a visible sign that points to an invisible God.

All-powerful God,
you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.

You embrace with your
tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us
the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace,
that we may live
as brothers and sisters,
harming no one.

Creative Spirit, enlighten our hearts
and remain with your world.
Amen.
