In his work, “On the Trinity,” Saint Augustine said the Trinity is God—the lover, Christ—the beloved, and the love that flows between them. The heart of God is relationship.

At the center of reality is not competition, fear, or power, but mutual giving, shared adoration, and love freely poured out. The only objective truth is subjective to itself.

If you’re left saying…what?!...I don’t blame you. Let me put it this way. The divine heart is the lover, the beloved, and the love they share. When we gather for worship, there is God, and there is we who are the body of Christ, in shared and mutual adoration. God loving us and us adoring God, which means look to your right and look to your left to see what the Trinity looks like.

We experience the Trinity when we share love through our compassionate words, our meaningful music, our acts of service, our intentional listening, our curiosity with what our neighbor is going through, our struggle for justice in an world obsessed with competition and survival of the wealthiest, our desire to take care of our planet, our willingness to do what it takes to defend the defenseless, the command to protect the innocence of those who are abused, the daily work of getting our hands dirty to bring healing to those who are sick, and to let the grain of wheat that is our pride to fall to the earth when it means that a fellow child of God will find life.

You don’t need to have read Augustine in Latin to know that.
