The corporate worship experience verses the small group experience!
There are certain things that take place in a weekend corporate church service that are meant to happen in that environment and there are certain things that are meant to happen in a small group setting that cannot happen in a large corporate gathering (see Acts 2:46-48 NLT)!
1. True Biblical fellowship cannot happen during a weekend corporate worship service.
- When it comes to fellowship, size matters - smaller is better. You can worship with a crowd, but you can’t fellowship with one - Rick Warren.
- Fellowship is preparation for heaven!
- In order to be healthy and balanced as a believer we need large group worship in the temple courts (the weekend corporate worship service) and small group fellowship in homes.
- Small groups are meant for relationships - you don’t get relationships in a crowd.
2 – Discipleship takes place in small groups not in crowd like settings.
- Discipleship is a Biblical word for growing up. It is the process of growing to spiritual maturity, hence becoming a disciple (see 1 Corinthians 3:1-3).
- God doesn’t want you to stay a spiritual baby - He wants you to grow up (see Hebrews 5:11-13).
- A lot of people are saved but they’re shallow as if they are stuck in perpetual immaturity.
- Discipleship moves you to maturity.
3 - Ministry is often one way directed in the weekend worship experience (pastor or trained leader ministers to people) whereas in small groups everyone has an opportunity to minister (see 1 Peter 4:10).
- Ministry is not something pastors just do.
- Ministry is something everyone is called to do. It just means using your gifts and abilities to help other people in love.
- Anytime you use your talents, gifts, abilities, money, time, wisdom, energy, physical skill, opportunities, anytime you use anything God has given you to help somebody else in Jesus’ Name that is called ministry. And you are acting as a minister!
