The corporate worship experience verses the small group experience!

There are certain things that take place in a weekend corporate church service that are meant to happen in that environment and there are certain things that are meant to happen in a small group setting that cannot happen in a large corporate gathering (see Acts 2:46-48 NLT)!

1. True Biblical fellowship cannot happen during a weekend corporate worship service.
- When it comes to fellowship, size matters - smaller is better. You can worship with a crowd, but you can’t fellowship with one - Rick Warren.
- Fellowship is preparation for heaven!
- In order to be healthy and balanced as a believer we need large group worship in the temple courts (the weekend corporate worship service) and small group fellowship in homes.
- Small groups are meant for relationships - you don’t get relationships in a crowd.

2 – Discipleship takes place in small groups not in crowd like settings.
- Discipleship is a Biblical word for growing up. It is the process of growing to spiritual maturity, hence becoming a disciple (see 1 Corinthians 3:1-3).
- God doesn’t want you to stay a spiritual baby - He wants you to grow up (see Hebrews 5:11-13).
- A lot of people are saved but they’re shallow as if they are stuck in perpetual immaturity.
- Discipleship moves you to maturity.

3 - Ministry is often one way directed in the weekend worship experience (pastor or trained leader ministers to people) whereas in small groups everyone has an opportunity to minister (see 1 Peter 4:10).
- Ministry is not something pastors just do.
- Ministry is something everyone is called to do. It just means using your gifts and abilities to help other people in love.
- Anytime you use your talents, gifts, abilities, money, time, wisdom, energy, physical skill, opportunities, anytime you use anything God has given you to help somebody else in Jesus’ Name that is called ministry. And you are acting as a minister!

More leadership thoughts on solving problems

Questions that help solve problems:

What’s not working?

How important is this issue?

What are we learning?

What happens if we do nothing?

What does progress look like?

How can we make this better today?

What’s the next step?

Weak leaders listen to problems and do nothing.

Powerful leaders listen to resolve, solve, and move forward.

The difference between exceptional and average leadership is the ability to solve problems that matter.

Leaders solve problems - More Leadership thoughts on solving problems.

How to solve problems powerfully:

Become transparent as you walk through the solving process

Name the problem.

Create a “we” environment.

Talk with people at the center of the storm – get their perspective.

Remain focused on a solution.

Commit to quickly making things better. The longer you wait the more difficult solutions become.

Set expectations.

When appropriate, let the team solve the problem but you stay available.

The difference between exceptional and average leadership is the ability to solve problems that matter.

Leaders solve problems - Avoiding a problem is not solving a problem.

Remaining silent does not solve problems.

Remaining tolerant does not solve problems.

When you ignore a problem it grows.

Reluctance in solving a problem actually invites drama.

The longer you wait to solve a problem the harder it will be to act.

The difference between exceptional and average leadership is the ability to solve problems that matter.

How to look for a mentor:

1. The earlier you can have a mentor the better. Don’t be afraid to ask early in your career. It shows you mean business.

2. As your career changes or evolves so will your mentors. It’s ok to change mentors as your career changes. Few mentors will be life long!

3. Don’t ask, “Will you be my mentor?” Use informal settings or conversations to gain information, knowledge or wisdom you are seeking. Learn the power of casual intentional conversations in which you ask questions.

4. Look for mentors who are where you want to be. They have already arrived at where you want to go.

5. Learn to give back. Offer to help or assist your mentor in what's important to them. It shows you really care.

Conclusion: Someone has what you need - Someone needs what you have.

More thoughts on “ministry of interruptions”!

As a leader do you view disruption as an interruption to your ministry or have you discovered that interruptions are your ministry?

The other morning, I was at my office (the local coffee shop) working and this couple that I know comes in and strikes up a conversation with me. I close my lap top and give them my undivided attention and within minutes the husband was telling me about his best friend who recently died in a motorcycle accident. For the next hour, he opened up about his grief as he cried, laughed and told stories about their friendship.

Interruptions – as a leader, how do you face them and what does it reveal about you and your leadership?

Leadership thoughts on the ministry of interruptions.

1. God has divine setups if we will be open to them!

2. We are all on assignment and that assignment may include an interruption by the Holy Spirit as your anointing is needed to minister to someone in need!

3. Every single person is important to God - they need to know that He loves them - and we are God's ambassadors of that love!

4. If our steps are ordered of the Lord may we never underestimate God's plan of how He puts people in our path that need ministering to, loved on and sometimes a hug letting them know that it's going to be OK.

5. Remember - many times ministry simply happens out of interruptions!

6. Jesus’ ministry flowed from interruptions as none of his miracles were on his to-do list!

7. Sometimes Heaven announces "We interrupt your regularly scheduled program to bring this breaking news." God is good at interrupting our regularly scheduled programming on earth to bring the breaking news that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!

8. The Word of God clearly demonstrates instances where men and women were used of God as a result of Divine interruptions!
How do you handle interruptions?

Are you willing to let Heaven interrupt you to release the Love of the Father?

Interruptions are ministry!

Some leadership thoughts on navigating your ministry assignments:

1. God has divine setups if we will be open to them - even relationships.

2. We are all on assignment - your job has an assignment, your marriage has an assignment, your parenting has an assignment.

6. God is good at interrupting our regularly scheduled programming on earth to bring the breaking news that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!

How well do you handle when God interrupts you?

As a leader, don't underestimate the significance of what God is doing by the size of your audience - Jesus gave a private Bible study for two disciples that weren't even a part of his 12 and it lasted for 13 miles (Road to Emmaus)!

Leaders, when was the last time your discipleship was that intense?

When was the last time you scrapped the discipleship handbook and used life as the curriculum?

What does your discipleship look like?

A great quote from Smith Wigglesworth: “How is it that the moment you are filled with the Holy Spirit persecution starts? The devil and the priests of religion will always get stirred when a man is filled with the Spirit and does things in the power of the Spirit. If you remain stationary, the devil and his agents will not disturb you much. But when you press on with God, the enemy has you as a target."

Leadership lesson of making a difference.

You only affect someone when you are different from them!

People who think like you think, talk like you talk, act like you act and look like you look - people who are like you really have no affect over you!

If you talk like everyone else talks how can you challenge a conversation?

If you go where everyone else goes how can you challenge someone on their activity?

If you act like everyone else acts then how can you challenge their conduct?

To make a difference you may need to be different - that is how you have influence!
