Penny Campbell was an energetic activist for LGBTQ rights and an advocate for those facing mental health and housing issues. Penny was a plaintiff in the lawsuit that overturned a law prohibiting private, consensual s*x between same-s*x partners. She also was the daughter of beloved civil rights activist Rev. Will Campbell.

As we open our church’s celebration of Pride Month, we look back at Nashville’s first Pride Parade, held in 1988. It started at Fannie Mae Dees Park, with about 125 participants walking to Centennial Park. According to Tennessean coverage, “Protestors alongside blamed the marchers for everything from the recent lack of rainfall to the AIDS.”
