Total depravity is the biblical teaching that sin has affected every part of our human nature—our mind, will, desires, and affections. It does not mean that every person is as sinful as possible, but that sin has left us spiritually unable and unwilling to come to God apart from His grace.

Scripture declares:

“There is none righteous, not even one; there is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God.” — Romans 3:10–11

Paul also says that we were “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1) and were “by nature children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:3).

This is why salvation cannot ultimately depend upon human goodness, wisdom, or free will. A spiritually dead sinner needs divine grace to be made alive.

“But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ.”— Ephesians 2:4–5

Total depravity magnifies the glory of sovereign grace: the greater our helplessness, the greater the wonder of God's salvation.

Three Kinds of Sermons

Not every biblical sermon is structured the same way. Faithful preaching can take different forms while remaining true to God's Word. Among the most common sermon types are expository, topical, and textual sermons. Understanding the differences helps both preachers prepare faithfully and listeners better appreciate the message.

An expository sermon explains the meaning of a specific passage of Scripture in its context. The main idea, outline, and applications are drawn directly from the biblical text. The preacher's goal is to expose the author's intended meaning and apply it to the lives of God's people. Expository preaching allows Scripture to set the agenda rather than the preacher's personal preferences.

A topical sermon focuses on a particular biblical subject, such as prayer, forgiveness, faith, or stewardship. It gathers and explains relevant passages throughout the Bible to present a balanced, biblical understanding of that topic. When done carefully, topical preaching teaches the whole counsel of God on important doctrines and practical Christian living.

A textual sermon is built around a specific verse or short passage of Scripture. The main divisions of the sermon are drawn from that text, while additional Scriptures may be used to support and explain its truths. It emphasizes the central message of the chosen text without necessarily providing a verse-by-verse exposition of a larger passage.

Each of these sermon types has value when handled faithfully. However, regardless of the method, every sermon must be biblical, Christ-centered, and faithful to the author's intended meaning. As Paul charged Timothy, "Preach the word" (2 Timothy 4:2). The authority of preaching does not come from the preacher's creativity but from the inspired Word of God faithfully proclaimed.
