What is the difference between a monument and a flush marker? 🪦

Monument graves are designed with an upright granite monument placed at the head of the burial space. They typically require the purchase of at least two side-by-side graves and create a highly visible, traditional family memorial.

Flush marker graves use a ground-level granite marker to memorialize one or two people. The marker is set flat into the ground, usually at the foot of the grave, creating a more subtle, level appearance.

Both options provide a lasting place of remembrance, just with different styles of memorialization.

Sometimes even our most cherished landmarks reach the end of their lifespan. Due to structural concerns, the front entrance feature at Resurrection Cemetery has been removed. Though we will miss its beauty, we are excited for the opportunity to create something new in its place.

A perpetual care (or permanent care) fund helps ensure a cemetery can continue to be maintained long after it is full and no longer generating income from burials. Even then, the work continues, as roads must be maintained, landscaping cared for, buildings repaired, and equipment kept in use so the grounds remain safe and well-kept.

To support this long-term care, a portion of burial costs is set aside into the fund. It is invested so that its earnings can support ongoing maintenance, and is ultimately what allows these sacred spaces to remain cared for and accessible for generations to come.

In most cases, green burial costs are similar to those of a conventional burial and may not be significantly less expensive. Costs can vary depending on the choices a family makes. One difference is that green burial does not require an outer burial container, and biodegradable materials are used in place of traditional burial products.

The Caretaker’s Garden at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minneapolis is officially planted for the season! Thanks to the care and dedication of our St. Mary’s Field Worker, Baltazar, the garden is once again growing a variety of tomatoes, peppers, onions, and more! These fresh vegetables will be free to the local community for harvest as they ripen in the upcoming weeks.

While both provide a lasting place of remembrance, a mausoleum and a columbarium are designed for different forms of burial. A mausoleum is used for casket entombment, while a columbarium contains niches for cremated remains. Each offers families a sacred place to visit, reflect, and remember.
