“Do you know what I have done for you?” Jesus asks his disciples. Answering this question with our words and deeds is the beginning of becoming a follower of Jesus. As we hear the story of Jesus’ last days we are invited to live our lives loving one another as Jesus has loved us. All are welcome to become immersed in the mystery of God’s love.

In Matthew’s Gospel, Bethlehem becomes a dangerous place after the wise ones have departed. The only safe way forward for the holy family is to live as refugees. Joseph, Mary and tiny Jesus, flee a paranoid despot by traveling to Egypt and temporarily settling there. They rely on the hospitality of others and perhaps the help of a refugee community. They also rely on God’s guidance and protection. The young family’s life must have been forever shaped by this difficult chapter in their lives. How did this refugee experience affect Mary and Joseph? How was Jesus’ upbringing as child affected? Did the refugee experience enhance the compassion Jesus had for others—especially those traveling through hardship or without power? The good news is that we can face the circumstances of life head-on trusting that God will take care of us and others will help us along the way.

Portage Faith Children's Christmas Program 2025 this morning. Inspiring, entertaining, and filled with joy! The actors (sometimes turned ad lib directors) were superb. We all had fun in church this morning! Thanks to Erika Barnett this year's program. Merry Christmas.
