THE GRACE OF WORKING

For Francis, work was grace: a way to serve, contribute to the fraternity, live humbly and make the Kingdom of God present through ordinary tasks.

From tending the earth to preparing meals—and yes, even taking out the garbage and washing the dishes—the brothers share in that grace together.

This Labor Day, we give thanks for the dignity of all honest work and for everyone whose labor, seen or unseen, serves others and builds up our communities.

Every Christian is called to charity—to receive God’s love and give it away.

Today, on the Memorial of St. Teresa of Calcutta, we remember a saint who answered that call with her whole life, serving Christ among those most in need. The United Nations chose September 5, the anniversary of her death, as the International Day of Charity in recognition of her extraordinary witness.

For a Capuchin Franciscan, that call becomes a way of life: prayer, fraternity, simplicity, and service, especially among those on the margins.

One moment of investiture. Twenty-five years of daily yeses.

This summer marked 25 years since these seven men were invested as Capuchin novices at St. Philip Neri Parish in North York, Toronto. Today, every one of them continues to live his Capuchin vocation—a remarkable witness to perseverance, fraternity and the grace of God.

Please pray for these brothers—and for the men now discerning whether God may be calling them to begin the journey.

Happy World Beard Day! Long before beards had their own celebration, they held a distinctive place in Capuchin tradition:

“All formation is first of all the work of the Holy Spirit, Who inwardly gives life both to those forming and those being formed.”

—Capuchin Constitutions, 24.1

Formation in Capuchin life is more than a program completed or knowledge acquired. It is the work of the Holy Spirit within each brother and throughout the fraternity—continually drawing everyone more deeply toward Christ.

That work may begin with a simple willingness to come and see. You need not arrive with certainty; bring your prayers, your honest questions, and an openness to the next faithful step.

Blessed Apollinaris Morel of Posat was a gifted Capuchin preacher, confessor, and teacher. During the French Revolution, he refused to take the schismatic oath imposed upon the clergy, choosing fidelity to Christ and the Church despite the cost.

Imprisoned with other priests in Paris, he encouraged his companions, heard their confessions, and prepared joyfully for martyrdom. He was killed on September 2, 1792.

Blessed Apollinaris, strengthen all who face fear or persecution—and pray for those discerning the courage to give their lives entirely to Christ.
