📖 Today's SCRIPTURE reading

🕯 Holy Gospel of St. Matthew 9:9-15 ~

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" But when he heard this, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners." Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "The wedding guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

June 2 – Commemoration Day of St. Gayane the Virgin and Her Companions

Today, the Armenian Apostolic Church honors the memory of St. Gayane and her companions, whose faith, courage, and sacrifice continue to inspire Christians around the world.

St. Gayane lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (284–305 AD), a time when Christians faced intense persecution. She was the abbess of a group of 37 Christian nuns who fled Rome and sought refuge in Armenia to preserve their faith and devotion to Christ.

Among them was the beautiful virgin Hripsime. When King Tiridates III of Armenia learned of her presence, he desired to marry her. Hripsime firmly refused, declaring that she had already dedicated her life to Christ. Enraged by her rejection, the king ordered her torture and ex*****on.

St. Gayane and two fellow nuns encouraged Hripsime to remain steadfast in her faith despite the suffering she endured. For their devotion, they too were subjected to brutal torture and martyrdom. The remaining 33 nuns were also put to death, becoming witnesses of unwavering faith in Christ.

Nine days after their martyrdom, St. Gregory the Illuminator discovered their relics and buried them with great honor. Martyriums were later built on the sacred sites where they suffered, and in time the famous monasteries of St. Hripsime, St. Gayane, and Shoghakat were erected there.

On this feast day, Divine Liturgy is celebrated in Armenian churches worldwide. The evening before, special services are held with hymns and prayers dedicated to these holy martyrs.

Their story reminds us that true faith remains strong even in the face of suffering and that devotion to God can overcome every earthly trial.

🙏 May the life, memory and testimony of St. Gayane and her companions continue to strengthen and inspire us.
