GOD PROVIDES IN A MIRACULOUS WAYđł
Now I'm going to tell you a little story about God's talking and, every time I tell it, it absolutely breaks me up. It happened many years ago when my father was out preaching and our family had run out of food. I remember how Mamma came down to the kitchen that evening around dinner time and there was literally nothing in the house to eat. "Boys, let's go visiting," she suggested, and, in spite of the empty feeling gnawing at the pit of our stomachs, we followed her out the door as she headed for the Campbell's house.
By the time we arrived, they were sitting down to supper and Sister Campbell exclaimed, "Oh, you're just in time to have supper."
But Mamma replied quickly, "Oh, no, we're not hungry."
About that time my brother Vaden, who was a year older than I was, rammed his elbow into my side and whispered hoarsely, "Boy, I wish she had asked me!"
As we sat there watching them eat that good country cooking, I don't know about Mamma, but Vaden and Oral were having a terrible time with their stomachs! After they had cleared away the last of the supper dishes, it was time for us to go home and Sister Campbell sighed, "Oh, Sister Roberts, before you go, let's pray." The next thing we knew, Mamma and Sister Campbell were down on their knees, praying up a storm! Really, I thought they were going to pray all night!
Pretty soon I heard Mamma declare, "O God, how good You are! What a good God You are, and how good You've been to us!"
Vaden rolled his eyes at me and punched me in the ribs again as he whispered, "He ain't been very good to me!"
Now Vaden was a good boy. I don't mean to insinuate that he wasn't. But that night as he and I shuffled our way home with Mamma, he was really working God over! He even blurted out what an awful thing Mamma had done, first of all, by not letting us eat when Sister Campbell had invited us, and then she had had the gall to pray that prayer about how good God is and how the Lord was meeting all our needs!
He was going on and on when, all at once, something rose up out of my belly area, words that just burst out of my being, and I piped up, "Vaden, God will take care of us!"
But he completely ignored me and kept on whining and sniveling, "Well, Papa's a preacher and he's gone all the time and people don't give him anything and we're always running out of food. Besides, we've never even owned an automobile!" And on and on and on he went.
Finally, I exclaimed in exasperation, "Vaden, you shut up! God will take care of us!"
Now, I wasn't aware that that was God speaking to me. I wasn't thinking about God at all. Those words just popped out! They came bursting out of my innermost being, out of my belly! And, for a few fleeting seconds, those words turned the Spirit of God on inside a boy named Oral Roberts!
When we reached the doorstep of our little house, Mamma said, "Vaden, open the door."
But when he tried to push the door open, he cried, "Mamma, there's something behind this door!" So he shoved with all of his might and, when he finally forced the door open and flipped on the light, there was the most gigantic box of groceries we had ever seen in our lives!
Well, Mamma didn't act like it was anything strange at all! In fact, she never even missed a stride as she told us, "Boys, put that box in the kitchen," and we began to dive in! There were all kinds of food in that boxâgreat big sacks of flour and sugar and even a country ham!
Then Mamma exclaimed, "Bring me my apron!" and as she talked about the Lord being so good to us, she began slicing that ham and dumping flour and baking powder into a bowl to make homemade biscuits and cream gravy. I guess it was almost midnight when she finally spread that meal before us and we began shoveling it inâbig hot biscuits, country ham, red-eye gravy and cream gravy!
I'll never forget how I sat there with my mouth full, a great big grin on my face, and I turned to Vaden and exclaimed triumphantly, "See! I told you God would take care of us!"
Now, I didn't understand that that was God whispering in my ear as a little child, but there He was, speaking to me way back then. Time and time again things like that happened, but I never realized it was the Lord.
