Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral Christ Church Cathedral is a vibrant Episcopal church in the heart of downtown Lexington, Kentucky. We are a people of prayer and action where ALL are welcome!

Christ Church Cathedral serves a unique downtown ministry in the heart of Lexington near historic Gratz Park. We are a people of prayer and action, eager to serve those in our community. We have programs and events for all generations. Everyone can find a place for involvement and service as we seek to extend God’s love made known in Jesus Christ. God has a dream to heal the world. Cathedrals are

meant to give us a glimpse of that dream, and in so doing, to fortify and inspire us for that life-giving work. The Cathedral is the bishop's seat for the Diocese of Lexington, with 8,900 Episcopalians, stretching from Middlesboro to Ashland to Covington. The Christ Church Bookstore is open Monday-Thursday, 10:00am-2:00pm and Sunday, 9:15am-10:15am.

Today we celebrated Trinity Sunday and the ministry of the baptized. We gave thanks for the seen and the unseen — the usher who is the first face many people see, the acolyte learning what it means to serve, the person who prepared the altar before anyone arrived, and the choir member lending breath and voice to prayer.

We were reminded that God is a communion of love, and that we are created in that image. Our ministries together reveal God. Not perfectly. But truly.

This is what we were made for.

Made For This

Dean Carol invites us on this Trinity Sunday to considerthe opening words of Genesis, exploring what it means to be created in the image of a relational God: not simply welcomed into the Church, but invited into God's ongoing work of love in the world.

At the beginning of every service, one of our acolytes carries the light in. That is not a small thing. R.K. has been serving as an acolyte at Christ Church Cathedral for four years. Every Sunday R.K. or one of our other acolytes helps lead the procession — carrying the flame that has been carried in this place for generations before them, and will be carried long after.

The ministry of the acolyte is one of the oldest in the church. It belongs to anyone who is called to it — young or old, new or long-standing. At the baptismal font, every one of us is made a minister. Some of us are made for this particular light.

R.K., thank you. We see you.

There is a moment every Sunday morning that most people don’t notice. Someone opens the door. Not just physically — though Abbey does that too. But in the way she greets you. In the way she makes you feel like you were expected. Like there was a place here with your name on it.

Abbey has been at the Cathedral for more than 2 years now. We asked her what keeps her coming back.

“What I love most about being an usher is being the smiling face someone new sees when they enter our church doors. Sometimes it takes a lot for someone to take the first step into a new church and it can be overwhelming and intimidating. I try to keep in mind what I received upon my first visit to Christ Church Cathedral (2.5 years ago!) and provide that to each human being walking through our doors - a welcome, a smile, a human connection. I also love the relationships it allows me to build with our parishioners that I get to greet and welcome each week!”

Ever feel like things are falling apart? Every week people come through our doors and find something that holds. We find what we’re made for — peace, purpose, a place just to be.

This Sunday we're celebrating the people who make that possible. And reminding ourselves that ministry belongs to all of us — not just the ordained. Everyone. There's a place for you here too.

This week as we highlight the Ministry of the Baptized, we give thanks for the baptisms of Leo and Mason Mansueto and Fields Sweeney that we celebrated this past Sunday. In baptism we are reminded that nothing can separate us from the Love of God and we are marked as Christ's own forever. Everyone is invited. All are welcome.

Before worship begins, something else is already happening.
Greg and the breakfast team have been here since 8am. The coffee is on. The food is ready. The tables are set.
Most people will walk past without thinking about it. That is exactly how Greg would want it — not because the work doesn’t matter, but because the work is done for other people, not for recognition. This week we are changing that.
We don’t call what Greg does volunteering — because at the baptismal font, every one of us is made a minister. This is what that looks like on a Sunday morning.
Greg, thank you. We see you.
