Meet FPC’s new organist, Dr. Sarah Simko. Sarah is a concert and collaborative organist, and scholar. During the week, she serves as the Liturgical Coordinator for the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio. She has served many Presbyterian and Episcopal churches over her career as an organist, in Michigan, upstate New York, and Ohio. She is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, and earned her masters and doctoral degrees in organ performance
from the University of Michigan.

She has given recitals at notable venues including the Pipes at One series, Trinity Church, New York City; St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor; Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church, Detroit; Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Detroit; Methuen Memorial Music Hall, Methuen, Massachusetts; St. Paul’s Cathedral (Anglican), London, Ontario, Canada.

She is a member of the Anglican Association of Musicians, and serves on the editing board of the journal. She is a long-time member of the American Guild of Organists, serving multiple chapters as Secretary. She appears regularly with Beyond Choir; and Heri et Hodie chamber choir.

Sarah is a recipient of a Presser Foundation Graduate Award, for the purpose of creating a comprehensive set of recordings of organ music by living American female composers. The goal of this project is to expand the accessibility of a rich, and overlooked body of repertoire.

She has given lectures (in person and virtual) and lecture-recitals on her work for the Women Organists and Organ Builders of North America; Historical Keyboard Society of North America; numerous University of Michigan Organ Conferences; Grace Episcopal Church, Providence, Rhode Island; the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Guild of Organists; and the Detroit Chapter of the
American Guild of Organists.

Sarah and her fiancé (Abe) make their home on a small farm in northern Kentucky.

A Backpack Blessing is moment for us to encourage students of all ages, as well as those who work in an academic setting. The beginning of a school year is an important time to recognize God’s faithfulness and care.

Check it out! As we work on a number of property projects this year on our church campus, we decided to have our historic exterior wooden signs brought up from the basement to be repaired, refinished, and refreshed. Thank you to the communications and facilities staff that made this possible!

Eleven of our youth spent this past week in Louisville serving on their Mission Trip alongside the La Escuelita Learning Hub at Beechmont Presbyterian Church.

Throughout the week, they painted walls and classroom furniture, organized learning spaces—including the art room—and helped prepare the church campus for Vacation Bible School and the upcoming school year.

Beyond the projects, our youth built meaningful relationships as they worked, learned, shared cultures, and played alongside students from La Escuelita. They also grew closer to one another, discovering that youth mission trips can be about more than the work we do—and about the people we meet and the community we build.

The impact of this week will be felt long after the paint has dried. Our youth and the adults who took them, are deeply grateful for this opportunity to serve, learn, and grow together.

FPC Youth will share stories from their Mission Trip at the Sunday Supper on September 20.

It’s been a great week in Montreat, NC for many of our First Presbyterian church family. Conversations were fruitful, worship was refreshing and encouraging, art was beautiful and life-giving, and music was inspiring! Travel mercies to them as they return from this week’s Worship & Music Conference.
