I Want to Be a Shepherd
David Durst 12.24.25

I can’t be Zechariah, that priest who held his tongue.
I can’t be old Elizabeth, who delivered Cousin John.
I can’t be that John either, who ran ahead of Christ.
But I could be a shepherd who heard the good news twice.
We have had a wonderful Advent season at New Life. Here's a part of it. Here's a poem from Pastor David that was part of the Christmas Eve service.

"I Want to Be a Shepherd"

I can’t be the blessed mother, so blessed to carry him.
I can’t be Daddy Joseph, meeting Mary’s every whim.
I can’t join the angel chorus, pledging peace to all the earth.
But I can be a shepherd who seeks dear Jesus first.

The shepherds heard one angel, and then ten thousand more.
They followed the directions and found the newborn Lord.
A manger in a stable held the blessed child of glory.
They ran to tell their neighbors the world’s greatest story.

I can’t be in the Temple like Simeon of old,
Or saintly prophet Anna who fasted in the cold.
They held to God’s great promise of the Savior coming near.
But may I be a shepherd to tell the people here.

The world is the same now as it was in Jesus’ day.
Folks steeped in sin and fear that God can wash away.
Stars still point to Jesus, who is making all things new,
So, may I be a shepherd who speaks the
gospel true.
