Pastoral Care Courses Start This Summer!

Saint Vincent College and Seminary will inaugurate its new Mental Health and Pastoral Counseling Program this summer with the introduction of a Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Care, offered through the Seminary’s Institute for Ministry Formation (IMF).

The Certificate in Pastoral Care is designed to prepare students to serve as “first responders” in supporting clergy as they address the growing mental health needs within their communities. These needs include grief, anxiety, addiction, depression, and challenges in relationships, concerns that affect nearly one in four Americans. In addition to ecclesial settings, graduates will be equipped to serve in social service agencies and healthcare environments.

This Thursday, March 26, in partnership with the Saint Vincent Seminary Institute for Ministry Formation and the Saint Vincent College Theology Department, the Saint Vincent Center for Catholic Thought and Culture will be hosting Prof. Beth Hlabse of the University of Notre Dame to give a talk on “Faith and Mental Health.” Her talk will be at 7 pm in the Foundations Room.

Prof. Hlabse currently serves as program director for the Fiat Program on Faith and Mental Health at the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame. In that capacity, she leads the Institute’s efforts to generate pastoral research, education, and formation opportunities on mental health and the Catholic tradition. She is a trained mental health counselor herself.

We were excited to form 35 students in the Art of Accompaniment this week at the Maryvale Retreat Center in Valley City, North Dakota.

Priests, religious, and lay leaders spent the week learning from Fr. Boniface Hicks. The course provided students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the interior life and dynamics of spiritual growth, as well as learn the art of listening to others with an open and vulnerable heart.

What a joy to offer this course in the heart of the Midwest.
