Did you know the word "Christian" was first used because of St. Barnabas?

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Barnabas, Apostle. When he brought Saul of Tarsus to Antioch and the two spent a year teaching, it was in that community and momen that the followers of Jesus were first called "Christians."

"As with all Catholic schools, we won’t be compartmentalizing the faith,” said Guenther. “The truths of the Catholic faith are incorporated into every subject, whether philosophy, history, science or any other element of the curriculum.”

We see five local people we know. Do you?

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion is hosting Catholic Saints of America, a special exhibit for America’s 250th birthday honoring the holy men and women who helped shape the Catholic faith in the United States — including four witnesses with ties to the Diocese of La Crosse.

The exhibit will bring together relics, speakers from across the country, a novena for our nation and a first-of-its-kind look at Saints, Blesseds, Venerables and Servants of God who lived and served in America.

It is a beautiful chance to celebrate our Catholic heritage, pray for our country and be reminded that holiness is not something far away. It has walked our roads, served our communities and helped form the Church right here in our own diocese.

In Dilexit Nos, Pope Francis describes the consoling nature of devotion to the Sacred Heart as “flesh and blood in the Church’s pilgrimage through history;” a mutual sharing of suffering between Christ and us (no. 157). Because Christ bore our sin in the wounds of his passion and death on the cross, we console him for our affronts. Because we also raise up our suffering to Christ, we ask him to console us.

Let us ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus for strength and increased faith with this prayer by Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J.
