Meet the Artist! Katie Scheetz
Master Arts and the Knoxville chapter of the American Guild of Organists presents Katie & Scott Scheetz in an organ duet recital, Sunday, Sep. 6, 3:00 pm
Katie Minion Scheetz began her musical career at the age of four when she started violin lessons on a tiny quarter-size violin. She began piano lessons in elementary school and added organ in high school. She won first place in both the prestigious Arthur Poister Scholarship Competition in Organ Playing and the Fox Valley chapter of the American Guild of Organists’ Regional Competition for Young Organists. Named by The Diapason as a young organist showing “superior accomplishments, leadership, creativity, and innovative thinking,” Katie was inducted into the inaugural “20 under 30 - Class of 2015.”
Katie completed her Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance with distinction at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of music, studying with Dr. Janette Fishell. She studied with Michael Gailit in Vienna, Austria, for a semester, then moved to Toulouse, France, where she completed her Fulbright grant, studying with Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen. She earned her Master of Music in Organ Performance at SMU, studying with Stefan Engels and Christophe Mantoux, and earned her second Master of Music in Musicology under the guidance of Dr. Zachary Wallmark. Her thesis is titled “Charles-Marie Widor's Symphonie Romane: An Examination of the Performance Tradition” and combines her Fulbright research with her more recent research on the subject.
Katie is the Organist and Interim Director of Music Ministries at Church Street United Methodist Church. For the last decade, she served in Organist and Associate Director of Music positions in Dallas, Texas, at Lovers Lane UMC and Highland Park UMC. She has served in volunteer positions on boards for the American Guild of Organists, the Choristers Guild, the Greater Dallas Handbell Association, and other musical nonprofits. In her spare time, she can be found spending time with her pet chinchillas, trying new recipes in the kitchen, helping her husband in the garage as they restore their vintage cars, or autocrossing in her Miata.
