Today we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross — also called "The Triumph of the Cross" — commemorating the day Saint Helena discovered the True Cross in Jerusalem, centuries after it had been hidden away.

From its discovery in 326 A.D. to its theft by Persian forces and dramatic recovery by Emperor Heraclius in 629 A.D., the Cross has a history as powerful as its meaning.

Today we celebrate the victory and triumph of the Cross. Through the Cross, Christ turned a symbol of defeat and death into one of hope and life. He willingly endured rejection, humiliation, and agony on the Cross out of His immense love for us, so that we might enter eternal life with Him.

The Cross reminds us that there is no depth of suffering or darkness that God’s love cannot enter. May we embrace our own crosses with faith, knowing that Christ's love is always greater than our suffering.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage, resilience, and unity that emerged in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Twenty-five years later, the lessons continue to resonate: the power of community, the importance of compassion, and the strength that comes from supporting one another.

On this day of remembrance, we also acknowledge that trauma can leave lasting emotional wounds, often long after headlines fade.

At Catholic Charities of East Tennessee, our Mental Health Counseling Program exists because healing matters. Through counseling services rooted in dignity, compassion, and hope, we help individuals and families navigate grief, anxiety, trauma, and life's many challenges.

Today, as we remember the past, let us also commit to caring for the emotional well-being of our neighbors and building stronger, healthier communities together.

25 years ago today, our country was forever changed. 🇺🇸

We pause in prayerful remembrance of all those who lost their lives in the terror attacks of 9/11. May we honor their memory by choosing compassion over hatred, courage over fear, and peace over violence.
⁣
We give thanks for the extraordinary courage and selflessness of the firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, medical workers, military members, and countless ordinary people who came to the aid of others that day and in the days that followed.
⁣
We also pray for the families who continue to grieve, for those who still bear physical and emotional wounds, and for all whose lives were changed by the events of that day.
⁣
May this day remind us to be instruments of peace and love in a world that still longs for healing. 🙏

Bishop Beckman visited St. John XXIII University Parish and the students of VolCatholic last night. He spoke and then held a Q&A with the students. College can be a time of tremendous growth and discovery, and campus ministries like VolCatholic offer a place to encounter Christ, ask meaningful questions, and build community.

How do you view holy days of obligation? Does the idea of having to go to Mass an extra day during the week seem like something that we "have" to do, rather than something that we "want" to do? Part of the problem is that many Catholics no longer understand the reason for the holy day we celebrate and how to make it special.
⁣
If you are going to reclaim holy days, you have to make them a priority. First, make sure you understand the meaning of the feast day. Then, you can find new ways to incorporate Catholic traditions into your observance of the day.
⁣
There is a hunger in our world for spiritual meaning and purpose in life, a constant need to celebrate what is good and holy. By reclaiming holy days of obligation, you may start a groundswell of interest and enthusiasm in your home, parish and community.
