Sept 13 - Weaving the Waters - Rev. Erin Dajka Holley and Melanie Jackel

Come in, come in. The days begin to shorten; summer vacation ends. From travels, lazy days in the sunshine and heat, we return to the regular patterns of the fall. We return to our church home, to one another. Through our interdependence, we will weave ourselves as a community. We will merge our waters into our ever-flowing stream

Our Ingathering service is for all ages. Kids will remain through the entire service. We will sing together, listen to words, engage in activities, and complete the Water Ceremony, each adding our own little bit of water to our shared waters. Your family may bring a small amount of water from your summer, if you gathered it. We will also have plenty of small jars of water in the lobby to use for our ritual.

Sept 6 - When your friend is grieving with Rev. Dr. Peter Luckey

Rachel Goldberg Polin, in her book, When We See You Again, tells the story of her son, Hersh’s Oct 7, 2023 kidnapping and death. In talking about her grief, she said that people did more harm than good by saying things like “things will get better”. Rachel’s anguish begs the question: What is the nature of grief? How can we be healers of one another? This will be the framework of Rev. Luckey’s message.

For millennia, people have debated destiny and free will. That debate has been in terms of the will of higher powers, forces, or gods imposed upon us and our ability to impact our own outcomes. More recently, some have argued that destiny is based in science, and that it precedes free will. Let’s wrestle with all of this together.

HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SUNDAY SCHOOL

It’s Backpack Blessing Sunday! Kids are invited to bring their school bags to the service for a special ritual blessing as the school year kicks into high gear. Backpacks are optional, not required for participation.

After the ritual, children and youth will be sung out of service and then gather in Conover for obstacle course fun. Nursery care is available for ages 4 and under.

August 23 - Searching Together - Rev. Erin Dajka Holley

Melanie and Rev. Erin especially invite families with children to attend this Sunday, as many kids are returning to school. In place of a story, the congregation and kids will bestow upon one another blessings for their learning. Then, the kids will move downstairs for their summer activities.
For the rest of the service, we will consider the “free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” How do we engage in this work of finding what is true and right in life not only as individuals, but as a larger, interdependent whole?

About the Museum:

The Steamboat Arabia sank near KC in 1856 and was recovered in 1988. The preserved artifacts are now displayed at the Arabia Steamboat Museum in the historic City Market which will close this November. The collection includes clothing, fine china, carpentry tools, guns, dishes, children’s toys, and some pretty old pickles. Check out their website here: https://www.1856.com/

Logistics:

– Arrive: You can carpool from All Souls at 10:00 AM, – park at the church and take the streetcar, or – – meet us at the museum about 10:20 AM. Indicate on the sign-up page which you’ll do.

– Admission: $6.50 for children, $16.50 for adults, and $15.50 for seniors.

– Lunch afterwards at the nearby Harry’s Country Club.

Humans are storytellers. In fact, that may be what makes us unique on this planet. But a curiosity, scholars of literature insist there are only six or seven basic plots. Everything else is elaboration on those few themes. That means how different cultures and traditions tell the "same" story is a remarkable window into the values of a group and, equally, a window to and for our souls.
